Caulking the gap between concrete and a house is a simple DIY process that can be done in less than a half hour. This method involves cleaning the gap with debris, adding a backer rod if the gap is large enough, and applying polymer caulk if it is smaller. The caulk is then blended against the house using sand to create a nice texture. This method can also be used in the interior of your home, caulking trim and baseboards.
Seal cracks in concrete with durable urethane caulk to keep water out and protect your foundation and walks from further cracking and eroding. It is important to regularly check your foundation for cracks and seal them when necessary to prevent issues. Window and door frames are most often in need of sealing, as old caulk loses its elasticity and cracks when wood expands and contracts.
To seal outside house foundation cracks, excavate the soil around the perimeter of your foundation, clean and prep your foundation walls, and fix damage to your foundation walls. There are two options: trenching along the foundation and adding a concrete barrier or trenching along the foundation and using a sealer to seal any gaps where the foundation meets the house.
To create an impermeable water barrier on the outside of the foundation, either waterproof cement, bitumastic roofing cement, or Ora plastic can be used. Caulk narrow cracks using a caulk gun to seal any narrow cracks to the foundation and patio spaces. Cracks that are 1/4 inch wide or less are typically sealed using a caulk gun.
