To refurbish and update old outdoor light fixtures in your home on a budget, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper application and drying time. Once the paint or finish has fully dried, reattach any removable parts and assemble the light fixtures back together. Disassemble the light fixture, remove the glass panes, clean the parts with denatured alcohol, and sand the fixture with steel wool to remove any corrosion. Choose a metallic spray paint with primer added for polished brass fixtures or a flat finish spray paint with primer added for painted exterior lights. Shake the fixture before cleaning.
To ensure safety, turn off the power to the light fixture before cleaning. If a severely oxidized outdoor light fixture is present, turn off the circuit breaker to the light fixture. Powder coating companies can take rusty lawn furniture or faded light fixtures, blast away the old finish, and apply a new one.
To revive old outdoor lighting, try a new bulb and check your breaker. If it flips back off, you might have a short. If it does, go to the home improvement store and grab a new light fixture.
