Shell Busey provides a comprehensive guide on how to patch wood siding, covering methods for fixing small and large holes using wood filler, epoxy putty, and exterior paint. To patch a hole in vinyl siding, use sandpaper, shop rags, a putty knife, exterior filler or putty, and exterior paint.
First, lightly sand any raised or rough edges around the hole with 100-grit sandpaper. Remove any dust or debris from the area with a lightly water-dampened rag. Next, use a putty knife to spread a thin layer of exterior filler or putty over the hole. The best way to patch wood siding is to remove any debris and loose material, including paint, from the area before filling the hole. If the hole can be slightly larger than the damaged area, you’re done.
For minor repairs, such as patching a hole or crack, use a waterproof exterior wood filler. For holes up to and gouges narrower than 1/2 in., use Elmer’s interior/exterior Carpenter’s Wood Filler.
To break loose the lower half of the damaged piece, start at one end and gently tap a small pry bar underneath the butt edge. Mix Rock Hard putty in a paper cup with three parts powder to one part water. For smaller holes, buy PVC and glue a cap to it. Use exterior caulk and screw through a piece of scrap wood on the front to hold the back in place until the glue dries. Fill the hole with wood putty or epoxy putty.
The best way to patch wood siding is to find more of the same or similar material, clean out or expand the hole, cut the new material to match, and glue it in place.

To fill small holes in wood, use a putty knife or epoxy ball, or mix sawdust or wood shavings to form a paste. Sand the paste flush with the wood’s surface, then apply paint or varnish as needed. For larger holes, mix with sawdust. For extensive damage or severely rotted wood, use epoxy. Shellac sticks, also known as burn-in sticks, are solid sticks of colored shellac used to fill small imperfections in wood, matching different wood types and grain.
How to fix a large hole in wood?
Wood filling is a crucial process for repairing large holes in old wood due to rot or poor craftsmanship. To fill these holes, clean the hole, remove debris, and apply wood glue until nearly full. Insert toothpicks until the hole is filled, allow the glue to dry, and then sand the dried area until it is flush with the surrounding wood. Wood putty is a compound designed for repairing holes in wood, available both pre-made and as a powder mixed with water.
Its color closely resembles wood, making it ideal for blending in holes when the wood grain remains visible. While there are tutorials on creating wood putty using drywall compound and fine sanding dust, many opt for off-the-shelf wood filler putty. Wood putty is among the most popular options for filling voids, especially small ones like screw holes in visible locations.
How do you fix a woodpecker hole in wood siding?
It is recommended that epoxy filler be applied in a generous quantity to the holes, with an excess amount added to allow for shrinkage. The filler should then be smoothed with a putty knife and levelled with the siding. It is essential to allow the filler to dry thoroughly, which may take several hours or even overnight.
How to repair holes in exterior wood siding?
To patch a hole in wood siding, use a waterproof exterior wood filler that expands with the wood as temperatures and humidity levels change and won’t shrink after curing. Remove loose paint, dig out rot, sand the area, and mix and apply the wood filler with gloved fingers or a putty knife. Once the filler hardens, sand the area smooth. If the wood siding shows signs of extensive damage, warping, or cracking, it may be time for a full replacement. If you decide to replace, consider alternative materials like engineered wood.
Engineered wood has many of the same qualities as wood siding but is more durable, resistant to water damage, mold, warping, and insect infestations. It’s also affordable compared to solid wood siding and requires less maintenance over time. If you’re not a home improvement pro, contact local contractors for a quote for a full replacement.
What can I use to fill gaps in wood siding?
To repair cracks and splits in wood siding, use an appropriate wood filler with less than a 1/16-inch gap. Avoid using fillers that cure hard, such as architectural epoxies, auto body fillers, or interior-grade fillers, as they can cause the wood siding to contract and expand.
Flexible caulk is the best product for cracked or split siding, but not all caulks will work. Standard acrylic latex caulk is too shiny for wood grain splits, and most wood siding has some texture. Woodpeckers drill small holes in siding to locate insects and attract mates. Filling these holes with epoxy putty can be done with sanding and painting. If the holes are too large, a siding replacement may be necessary. James Hardie® fiber cement siding is a popular choice due to its durability, pest resistance, and long-lasting nature. This method can prevent future damage from woodpeckers.
Can wood filler be used outdoors?
Wood filler is not suitable for outdoor use due to its potential for shrinking and cracking, especially during temperature fluctuations. However, some two-part wood fillers are designed for both interior and exterior use, with special hardeners to prevent shrinking and cracking. To prevent pests from entering your home, check for gaps between walls and window frames or door jambs using a caulk gun to seal them. Apply exterior grade caulk that matches the frame color or is clear and can be painted. Smooth the sealant out with a caulk finisher or finger. Woodpecker damage is not typically covered by homeowners insurance as it is considered preventable. If you notice cone-shaped holes in your siding or near your roofline, it’s likely a woodpecker infestation. To prevent further damage, you can install ultrasonic bird repellant devices, wrap Mylar tape around gutters and roof soffits, seal any existing holes in your attic or siding, and call a pest control specialist if the woodpecker continues to return.
How to fill large holes in siding?
Fixing a hole in vinyl siding is a simple task that can be done quickly by obtaining a matching piece of siding, cutting a replacement larger than the damaged area, cutting off the top nailing strip, holding the replacement piece over the damage, and permanently attaching the new piece with construction adhesive. The most challenging part is finding a tinted caulk or new siding piece that matches your house color. To fix small vinyl siding holes, fill the hole to overflowing with tinted or paintable caulk, let it cure, trim the caulk flush with the siding, or paint it if you cannot find the right color.
To fix medium vinyl siding holes, unlock the bottom of the broken piece of siding, attach foil tape smoothly across the back of the siding, lock the piece back into place, and spread a thin layer of matching siding caulk over the exposed foil tape.

Because Zillow advertised on this page I must send out a warning. It and other internet real estate websites are garbage. I was looking for a home last summer and their accuracy for listings that were still for sale was less than 50%. It’s a huge waste of time. Real estate agents keep a close guard over the system they use in order to remain relevant.
Absolutely do Not do what is being done here. Caulking is great for certain applications but this is Not one of them. Best patch method in exterior wood siding or facia, soffit, door jams etc is good old fashioned Bondo. Mix, set, dries rock hard in minutes, sand flush, prime and paint. Will last a lifetime and will not rot. That caulking spot is soft, spongy and will shrink when curing. Caulking is made for cracks and seams and that’s it. Do Not repair large holes or rot in wood with just caulking.
