Is a bay window outdated?

Angled bay windows, an outdated design trend, are no longer fashionable. Instead, larger, non-standard windows like straight box bay windows are more modern and can add light to the interior of a home. Box bay windows are simple, rectangular forms with side walls perpendicular to the house wall, sometimes featuring a group of windows at its front. They can be trimmed for a contemporary look and maximize floor space. Installing a new bay window is affordable, especially if you can do it yourself.

Alternatively, you could replace angled bay windows with large, flat windows, which are common in modern homes with minimal framework, allowing maximum light infiltration. These windows can be installed inexpensively and provide a more spacious interior.

  • Have you not just treated the symptom and not the cause? Surely there is a reason why that wood rotted. It also looked like the framing may have had some mold. Don’t get me wrong, I like the technique and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m just asking so that if it happens here, I don’t have to do it again in a couple of years. Thanks, Dustin.

  • Great articles. I have a ceiling light install question. I replaced my ceiling fan &light with a flush mount ceiling light. When I removed the fan, I was left with black, white, ground, and red wires in the box. I connected black to black, white to white, and ground to ground, and capped the red. On the wall switch, the 3 speed fan switch now runs the light (light intensity changes with switch position) and the wall on/off switch does not do anything. So my question is do you see anything wrong with running the light through the 3 speed fan switch? If this is not suggested, I could either replace the 3 speed switch or try to connect to the wall on/off switch. Does it sound like if I wanted to use my current wall switch that I should connect the light black lead to the red lead in the box? Thanks !!

  • Thanks for this article! I wanted to see if the rotten wood on my window could be repaired or if I’d need to replace the window. It seems it can easily be replaced which is a relief. I don’t have the tools( or skill ) so who should I get to do this? A joiner or window fitter? I don’t want to get the wrong tradesman out.
