To store fresh rosemary, follow these steps: 1) Wash the sprigs, rinse them in cool water, and lay them on a paper towel to dry. 2) Wrap the sprigs in a damp paper towel, place them in a zip-top bag, and store them in the crisper drawer. 3) Place the sprigs in a jar with water as an alternative storage technique. 4) Keep the rosemary refrigerated for 2–4 weeks.
To freeze your rosemary, wash and dry the sprigs by spreading them out in a single layer on a baking sheet and flash freezing for 2-3 hours. Store the sprigs in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture. Gently mist the wreath with water every few days to maintain its freshness.
There are two basic ways to store fresh rosemary in the refrigerator: 1) Store in a jar of water, where you place the fresh rosemary sprigs in a jar with an inch of fresh water, just like a bouquet of flowers. 2) Store the rosemary in bags, lay the sprigs side-by-side on a damp paper towel, wrap them up, and slide the packet into a zip-top bag. Remove as much air as possible, seal, and lay it to rest in your crisper drawer.
For short-term storage, ensure the sprigs are dry. Wrap loosely in paper towels or parchment and store in a perforated bag in a cool, dry place. For long-term storage, chop the rosemary up and freeze it in ice cube trays in water or olive oil.
To preserve a rosemary wreath, hang it in a ventilated dark place for 10 days. Dry rosemary stems upside down. To prepare rosemary sprigs, cut them into small pieces, place them in an airtight container or freezer bag, and freeze the leaves in an ice-cube tray with water or olive oil. Hang the rosemary in a place that’s out of the sun and has good air flow. It will dry on its own.
In summary, storing fresh rosemary is essential for both home cooks and gardeners. To ensure the freshness of your wreath, store it in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.

I adore cooking with Rosemary. I bake it into bread, Roast it with garlic for jars of roasted garlic and rosemary. Grind it with salt, for rosemary salt. I dry it with other herbs and make mixed blends. I infuse it with olive oil, butters and vinegars. All of which make great gifts as well when I have to much!
Infuse it in light olive oil with lemon peel and garlic. Heat it on the stove (don’t cook it) in the oil, then strain it. Put some fresh sprigs in a pretty glass jar with fresh lemon peel and some garlic cloves and fill with your infused oil. Beautiful on salmon and roast chicken. Makes a lovely gift too 🙂 Loved your article, thank you for all the great ideas!
your first Instinct when you do cuttings should be: give some to your neighbours. trimmings this big are great to start a new plant. Right now I have 3 big trimmings from one of my neighbours I try to root. If they all start roots, one goes into my backyard (near to the kitchen) one goes to my front yard ( where there is more sun) and one becomes a gift for someone else. If both do well in the garden they will be added to the stuff I regulary give away. Giving away stuff that grows in your garden is one of the easiest way to build up mutual support in your local community. If you pane ahead with your cuttings, you can root them before hand that has a greater success rate in replanting.
I’ve been using my (very little!) rosemary pruning to make tea. A mounded teaspoon of fresh rosemary leaves which I cut into smaller pieces with my kitchen shears is good for a decent size mug. Put in a tea infuser in your mug, pour boiling water over and let steep for 5 minutes. I’ve read that steeping longer gives a bitter taste. Said to be anti-aging and good for cognition — anyway, those are my hopes! 🙂
here in New Jersey I was wondering if September would be a good time to bring it inside and have it all year-round it’s in a pot last year I kept it outside and it rotted away in a apartment so I can keep it near a window what do you think about that need some feedback I’m going to buy a plant already started in a couple weeks I have Italian reggano I have in a pot inside until it gets warmer and 50 degrees above at night
Some people gave me a rosemary bush that was 4’x4′ and it was 80 out so I tied the bush upside down to hang for a week then stripped the needles from the bush and put the needles in a gallon jar for cooking in the kitchen. I used some of the sticks and ran meat threw them and baked the meat, great flavor. Some if they rosemary wood was used in my smoker. Awesome taste to the meat.
I have frozen some of mine, but I am definitely gonna try with the bugs I love out in the country and I am surrounded by old oak trees 🌳 and pecan trees we get all types of little critters especially when we have the cows in front field. I think i am also going to use it in my closet as well. I have a diffuser that stays on, but I bought 2 small rosemary bushes last yr and they have almost tripled in size, so I have it to spare. Thanks for the great ideas 💡
Ticket to Heaven 777 Think you already have a ticket to heaven tucked in your pocket? After all, you’re a good person whose good deeds outweigh your bad, right? Some believe that saying a prayer or being baptized is their ticket to heaven. You don’t want to be wrong about eternity, so here’s how to know if you’re good enough for heaven: “There is none who does good, no, not one” (Romans 3:12). God’s standard of goodness is perfection – in thought, word, and deed. That means that none of us can make it on our own. Even one sin will keep us from heaven. “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us” (Titus 3:5). In His mercy, God made a way to forgive His people. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross to pay the penalty for their sins, then He rose from the dead. You must repent and trust in Him ALONE for salvation. Only Jesus is the ticket to heaven. Which are you holding… Ticket to heaven? Or, ticket to hell?
Thank you for all the ideas! I have a rosemary bush that took on a life of its own while I wasn’t able to do anything in my yard due to a bad back. The bush is massive, to say the least (6 feet in diameter, and about 5 high). I had the idea of making a wreath for Christmas and cut a few branches back, but I had no idea that I could use it for so much more!
Wow the bugs don’t like them! I have brought a lot of wood into the house and there is a lot of bugs on them this year. So ironic I have too much rosemary to winter in the house. They have a job to do. I’ll stack the rosemary into the pile. The basement will smell so much better as well. Your article was so helpful to me. Thank you!
Hi! Thank you so much for the awesome article! I am hoping to get a rosemary plant soon and I’m so excited! Before quarantine, I had found gardening soooooo boring, but now I love growing my own veg/herbs! I was wondering about cutting the plant, I’ve heard you shouldn’t cut the ‘non-fresh/flowering’ parts or the plant dies – is this true?
Oooh…have just seen the apple & rosemary cheese…..would love to give that a go. I invested in one of those bag sets last year – I do agree so much easier than home made contraptions. I have a crab apple tree in my garden & the bag on three legs tripod set up are just great for when I make crab apple jelly.
