To create a straight line on stucco walls, use an angled brush, 1 1/4 inch masking tape, and 9 inch brown masking paper. Use a 3 inch angle/brush, 1 1/4 inch masking tape, and 9 inch brown masking paper with a 3M hand masker, and clear caulking. Using a paint sprayer can also help paint a perfectly straight line on any stucco wall.
Choosing the right interior stucco paint is crucial, and opt for a color designed for stucco. Here are eleven tips to help you paint perfect lines:
Use an angled brush: If you’re trying to paint a straight line with just a brush, be sure that it is an angled brush. Brushes with angled brushes can be used to fill in stucco grooves and make a quick pass with very little paint on the brush to strike the line.
Use painters tape (blue tape, Frog tape, etc.) to mask off areas you don’t want to paint green. Apply FrogTape® to the wall in the desired area, making sure the tape is straight and level. Press down firmly to seal. Practice, practice, practice.
Use an angled 2 inch brush: Don’t put too much paint on the wall; only paint a narrow line right along the edge of the tape, which can overlap onto the wall.
In summary, using an angled brush, using painters tape, and practicing can help create a straight line on stucco walls. By following these tips, you can improve your home’s appearance by filling in cracks and covering stains, and make a change by choosing a new color.

I’m a semi pro painter, painted several homes inside and out, but any time I’m in doubt, I just look up one of your articles. You always have great advice. Today you taught me to use 3M 2020 tape on stucco, thanks!! I have to paint the 2nd story eaves all the way around my house. They’re 60 years old and have never been painted (long story). The tannin bleeds right through the water based primers I’ve tried, going to try some oil based primer. Thanks for all you do.
Nice job. There are a lot of stucco situations where the surface is very rough and you can risk blow off or saturation of regular masking tape. In these situations i use 3M 3060 stucco tape. I use the tape by pulling off in half, that way its easier to use and you get 120yds of straight lines. Then masking is applied on top of stucco tape as usual. Most often used masking the stucco for painting eaves and masking along ground level concrete or flooring for a crisp line
Yes sir Chris I have a question Kelly from when I’m perusal you mask windows and then paint the stuccoafter you’ve done your second coat on your stucco what happens to those windows because now when you take the masking off do you prime and paint your trim with a brush or do you mask off the stucco and then paint your caulking

What type of paint do you use on stucco? I’ve read mixed reviews about painting stucco – some say don’t because you have to do it every 5 to 7 years, and just created a maintenance item on your house… and stucco needs to breath. Some say, you can paint it but use a product like: MasterProtect C 250 (formally BASF’s Thorosheen).
