This DIY home improvement video demonstrates how to install a prehung exterior door quickly and easily. To adjust the gap between the slab and the hinge jamb on a prehung door, use an adjustable wrench to bend the hinge barrels over. If there is an uneven threshold on one side of the door, you may need to make adjustments to the threshold or replace the sweep.
To install a prehung exterior door, check the wall for level and flash the rough sill and opening. Adjust each pair’s thickness until the gap between shims and string equals the gap at the first pair. Nail each pair to the trimmer and cut off the ends with a utility knife so they don’t protrude past the drywall. Add a new ¾-inch-thick oak threshold on top of the old one, trim the door slightly, and install a new door sweep that will make a tight seal when closed.
After closing the door and adjusting the latch-side gap, drive screws through the latch-side shims into the framing. This straightforward method focuses on water management, air infiltration, and smooth operation. A better way of adjusting door reveals is to either shave the hinge mortises with a sharp chisel to narrow the gap on the hinge side or pad out the hinges.
Bend the knuckles of the hinge at the top of the door frame with a crescent wrench. Take the hinge pin out and lift the bottom part. Install plumbing the hinge side jamb first and then shim around the rest of the door frame to get the gap even as possible. Use blocking that’s 1/4 to 1/2″ thinner than the gap and shim it out until it’s snug.
Re-check for plumb, inspect weatherstripping compression, partially set top and bottom screws, and shim and finish driving screws. Install wood shims to square up the door and nail them through to fasten the door to the walls.
