To measure the width, height, and thickness of a door, follow these steps:
Measure the door’s rough opening. Customary interior doors require 2″ (51 mm) for width and 2 ½” (64 mm) for height. However, each door manufacturer has their own R.O. requirements for these measurements.
Measure the thickness of the door slab to ensure a proper fit. Measure the jamb’s thickness from end to end, excluding the door slab.
Close the door and wedge a book or magazine underneath it to make the door more snug in the frame.
Measure your existing standard interior door size by taking a measuring tape and measuring from the bottom of the door.
Measure your prehung front door, which includes both the door and the frame that supports the door.
Take accurate and detailed measurements using a tape measure.
Measure the door frame from left to right, across the top, middle, and bottom.
Measure the door width from inside the door frame, starting at the top corner and measuring across.
For interior doors, measure from the floor to the top edge of the horizontal door jamb. Measure the depth of the side jamb from the interior edge to the door frame.
Measure the door frame opening inside the door frame on both the height and width. Measure internally in at least three different places and adjust the measurements as needed.
In summary, understanding the dimensions of doors is crucial for a smooth design and functionality. To measure the door slab, height, and thickness, follow these steps:
