How to stop a fridge from going mouldy when turned off?
An unplugged, turned off fridge is a breeding ground for mould, as water can enter every nook and cranny inside the fridge. To prevent mould growth, keep the fridge powered up and clean the inside. However, if the door is closed and left dirty, mould will come. Cleaning crumbs out can reduce mould, but the most important thing is to get the water out.
There are two ways to get the water out: leaving the doors open and leaving the fridge open for a few weeks. This will dry out the fridge completely, and you can close the doors if desired. However, the longer you leave the door open, the less chance of mould.
If you need to store the fridge longer than a month, a chemical dehumidifier containing calcium chloride can be a great solution. Silica gel sachets might also work, but they are unlikely to be up to the task and are more expensive. You can also close the doors early even on a wet fridge if the dehumidifier is big enough. Buy one for the fridge section and one for the freezer section, and be careful not to knock them over once they’re in place.

I can cut out using my central heating by getting a hot water bottle and going under the duvet! 🙂 p.s. I think people recommend using bicarbonate of soda (one used in cooking) and a cut lemon for a short while (do not leave it to get mouldy!)
