How To Get Interior Paint Off Clothing?

To remove paint from clothing, scrape off any wet paint and run the stain under warm water. Spot treat the stain with dish soap or laundry detergent, scrubbing with a soft brush. Launder as usual, repeating the process if the stain is not removed. If any paint remains after washing, don’t put it in the dryer as the heat will set the stain.

Stubborn water-based paint stains may need to be treated with acetone or a paint-specific stain remover formulated for fabric, like Motsenbocker’s Lift Off Latex Paint Remover or Goof-Off Paint. The process of removing paint from clothing goes like this: flush the stained area with warm water, then gently sponge it with a mixture of dish soap and warm water.

To remove latex paint stains, use a spoon, butter knife, or credit card to gently scrape off excess paint. Getting fresh and dried paint out of clothes takes a little more effort than just doing laundry, especially if you have used oil-based paint. Materials and tools needed include a butter knife or putty scraper, laundry detergent or dish soap, and rubbing alcohol (optional).

For dried paint stains, apply a mixture of detergent and warm water to help break down the paint molecules. For dried paint stains, use non-acetone nail polish remover to soften the paint. Gently dab the stain with the remover, rinse the garment, and rewash it as needed.

To remove latex paint stains, soak the clothes in a solution of water and baking soda. Mix baking soda and water to form a paste and apply it directly to the paint stain on your clothing. Vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, and even baking soda are touted as being effective. Hairspray and alcohol have been found to be effective in removing latex paint stains.

Using the right solvent for the job can be the difference between getting the paint stain out and it staying on your clothes.

  • Doing this will scrub the colour out of most fabrics, which is kinda annoying because you want to remove a mark, not create another one. I find the best way is too tackle it as soon as it happens, if possible. Oil based paint is easily removed with mineral spirits/white spirit when wet. “ARGH WHITE SPIRIT ON MY CLOTHES!?” you say? It’s OK as long long as it’s gently worked into the paint to remove and then immediately washed out with warm soapy water. It’s very important not to scrub with any hard abrasive type brush etc.. as this will remove the fabric colour and damage the fibers. Caustic soda solution has always been used for removing paint so you could try that and remember the same rules apply. It goes without saying that you should be wearing protective gloves (solvent resistant nitrile, not latex etc..) and goggles when using harmful chemicals.

  • I got wall paint on my yoga pants, and then I washed it with my fuzzy blanket. The paint completely transferred to the blanket, and now there’s blue paint on it. I have no idea what kind of paint it was, and I don’t want to ruin my blanket. I’ve tried peeling the pieces of paint out but the furs were ripping too. Help?
