How To Decorate With Soft Sugar Cookies?

Mary Edward Tasty’s recipe for soft sugar cookies is a must-try for those looking for a quick and easy treat. These cookies are made with butter and sugar, and are perfect for any holiday or party. To make them, cream the butter and sugar together in an electric mixer fitted with the paddle. Before decorating, double check the oven temperature to prevent the butter and sugar from melting too quickly, causing the cookies to lose their shape and look puffy.

To make the dough, combine the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and almond extract in a stand mixer or hand mixer. Mix in the dry ingredients. To keep the cookies soft, bake them until they are puffed and just barely set, not browning them or becoming crunchy. In a separate bowl, cream together the shortening, sugar, eggs, milk, and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients.

These sugar cookies take only six to eight minutes to bake, with the edges slightly browned but still light in color. To make the dough, beat the butter on medium speed 1-2 minutes, add salt and flour, and mix until just barely combined.

Why did my sugar cookies come out hard?

The common causes of dough overworking, baking for an excessive duration, and the incorporation of an excess of flour or sugar can result in the formation of tough gluten in the flour, the production of cookies that are dry and hard, and the potential emergence of health issues.

How do you keep decorated sugar cookies soft?

Baked and decorated cookies can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Ensure the icing has hardened before stacking and add a layer of parchment paper for additional protection. To save time by baking ahead, store sugar cookies and dough in their raw form. Sugar cookie dough should be used immediately at room temperature, as it may soften the butter and spread when baked. It also contains raw eggs and other perishables that should not be left at room temperature for long. Adding a layer of parchment paper between cookie layers is recommended for additional protection.

How do you soften sugar cookies?

To soften cookies, place them on a microwave-safe plate and cover with a damp paper towel. Microwave for 10-15 seconds until softened, being careful not to overdo it. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and wrap the cookies in aluminum foil. Heat in the oven for 5-10 minutes, checking regularly to avoid overheating or burning.

To soften cookies with bread, place them in an airtight container with a slice of bread and leave for a few hours. The bread releases moisture, rehydrating the cookies, making them soft and chewy again. Monitor closely to avoid over-softening.

Other ways to soften cookies include placing them in an airtight container with a damp paper towel, a plastic bag with an apple slice, or a damp tea towel. These methods work well to rehydrate cookies without causing them to become too soft or mushy.

Does adding more butter make cookies softer?

Following a brief period of time, the mixture undergoes a process of aeration and expansion, resulting in a lighter weight and a discernible change in color.

Should sugar cookies be hard or soft?

In order to create a dough that is soft and tender, it is essential to mix the dry ingredients only until they are incorporated, taking care not to overmix. A reduction in the amount of mixing results in a greater degree of tenderness in the cookies. In the event that JavaScript is disabled or blocked by an extension, or if your browser does not support cookies, we recommend that you employ an alternative solution.

What is the trick to making soft cookies?

To achieve soft cookies, bake them quickly in a hot oven at 375 degrees F, rather than a lower temperature. Slightly underbaking the cookies for about 1 minute will result in softer results. Remove the cookies from the baking sheet as soon as they set, leaving them on for three to five minutes. Once cool enough to move without falling apart, transfer them to cooling racks. Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature, not in the refrigerator. Refrigerating the cookies will dry them out, as the fridge removes moisture from the air as it cools, sucking it out of the cookies.

How do bakeries keep their cookies soft?

Light corn syrup is employed in the preparation of specialty cakes and confections to prolong the retention of softness and doughiness. In the case of conventional cookies, a tablespoon should be employed. Egg yolks provide starch, inhibit gluten progression, and maintain a viscous consistency. It is recommended that recipes which include egg yolks be selected in order to enhance the softness of cookies following the baking process. Additionally, egg yolks contribute to the formation of a viscous texture within the mixture.

Does white sugar or brown sugar make cookies softer?

Brown sugar promotes a dense, chewy texture in baked goods like brownies and chocolate chip cookies due to the moisture content in molasses. White sugar creates crispy, crunchy cookies with a drier texture. Many baking recipes combine white and brown sugars to achieve the best of both. Brown sugar is used in savory foods for its caramel-like flavor, such as meat rubs or marinades, but not in savory foods. White sugar is also used in baking to balance out savory or acidic dishes, like in baked salmon sushi.

What makes bakery cookies so soft?

Cornstarch is a flavorless thickening agent that is essential for cookies to have a soft and chewy texture. It is a game changer in cookie baking, providing a softer and more tender crumb. Cornstarch also prevents cookies from spreading too much during baking, resulting in a more compact, thick cookie. However, cornstarch isn’t the only ingredient that can make a cookie more palatable. Alternatives and the chemistry behind the softness-enhancing superstar are also important to consider. Cornstarch is a versatile ingredient that can be used in various recipes to achieve a more satisfying and palatable cookie experience.

What ingredient helps cookies stay soft?

To achieve soft and chewy cookies, use butter, brown sugar, or egg yolks in your recipe. Brown sugar, with its hygroscopic glucose and fructose, can hold extra moisture due to its molecular structure. Store cookies with bread, as it absorbs moisture from the bread, keeping them soft and workable. However, don’t overdo it, as too much bread can turn the baked goods to mush. Choose a neutral bread to prevent its flavors from transferring to the cookies.

To avoid over-baking, remove cookies from the oven a minute or two early while they’re still gooey. Once they’re cool enough to transfer, store them in a storage bag or container to keep them moist and chewy for longer. This method ensures that the cookies remain soft and chewy for longer. Remember to choose a neutral bread to avoid transferring its flavors to the cookies.

  • Do I have a story for you!!!! So in the 4th grade I brought home a snail to keep my catfish company. It wasn’t long til like you said, snails startes taking over my tank …this was before Google. Well, one day I come home to find A PILE OF SNAILS FLOATING…WITH AN EYEBALL POKING OUT FROM THE ONLY SPACE I COULD SEE! They MURDERED MY Catfish and SUCKED HIS FACE OFF!!!!! Safe your fish beforw it’s too late!!! I was scarred for life!!!! 😰🤣😰😰😰😰🤣🤣

  • 😀🤣😆😂. Cookie recipe looks amazing. I love a puffy doughy cookie❤️❤️ and the icing 😄🤣😊 Holy moley. Cooking is never this much fun at my house. Good luck with the snails! We had ONE snail in our tank and it spent a LOT of time in the water flow aeration trying to go to a new place. Guess it didn’t like our tank!!

  • So LOVE your articles, but THIS one is one of your BEST !!! Won’t be surprised if your next one is of you cleaning up your kitchen. LOL Will have to make these cookies this year in honor of you and The Green Apple Home. Miss that gal SO MUCH !!! BTW… Thanks for the heads up about snails. So glad I ALWAYS watch until the end. Keep us posted about how it all works out. I wouldn’t want to do any crushing either !! Hope you and yours have a fun and merry Christmas season.

  • “Because…science” oh my god you are so bloody funny Cass and awesome and gorgeous. Your my kinda lady …this is me baking too….lots of guessing and messing. Lol. Hope you are feeling a bit better after your surgery … you are looking really well! Sending love you crack pot you xxx Lorikate from Australia 😘🦋

  • You are looking amazing! You need your own cooking show – because you’re hilarious! (Put an apron on your Christmas list.) And last, but not least, having snail issues… You are always so full of surprises! We love you! By the way, this is actually the recipe for Sugar Cookies that I grew up on. They are literally the best. Sour cream – all the way! Continued prayers for you as you get further away from your surgery. Seriously, though, you’re looking great – you’re glowing!!

  • Hahaha, you don’t do much baking, do you Cas? I had to laugh with you when you had sugar blown everywhere with your mixer. By the way, if you lure snails to food (as onto a lettuce or cabbage leaf) you can then place them outside with the leaf and feed the birds at the same time. Just don’t put them in your flower beds. What is the life span of a snail? The whole life cycle of a land snail is not very long in human terms. A single snail can live 2 to 7 years according to its species, but in captivity, the life expectancy extends to 10 or 15.

  • Laughing about the snails. They’re basically hermaphrodites so yeah it must be one happy snail haha! 🤣 As for the icing sugar issues; start your mixer on the slowest setting then increase it gradually, once some of the sugar has been mixed in/damped down so it won’t go flying. My Nanna taught me that trick <3 xXx

  • I found a Vintage Robin Hood small cookbook, at a Thrift shop, next time my friends go up to Vancouver, I’m going to have them bring me back some flour, and yes I do use the little cookbook and the recipes, I’ve used has been really great. I’m going to use this recipe, I love Sugar Cookies, but I never had good results.

  • The same thing happened to me. My sister gave me one Malaysian trumpet snail and now it’s like 40. But luckily they can live in the substrate and it’s really good for aeration and they eat dead debris, keeping the tank clean. I also have a little pink ramshorn snail, and he/she was laying egg sacks and I was seeing babies. My betta began eating those babies, and I learned to recognize and remove the disc like egg sacks, so it’s in control now. lol

  • You can eat a cookie! ? Cass squirrel moment I got gastric bypass surgery it was excitingly painful that time I eat two extra bits of my jello cup… Two articles later… These are the best holiday cookies no implication that you yourself are not the one eating these cookies. You lose all this weight and have never to my knowledge shared a recipe on your website. Like you got skinny eating cookies. Not critical don’t read it with that tone just laughing 😂 you always so fun.

  • You are so hilarious! Your articles make me laugh out loud. Thank you so much for your website and your inspiration! Keep all of the awesome content coming whether it’s appropriate or not ( And I’m referring to some of your final thoughts after your article is over.
