Interior designers often use rugs as the lead item in decorating schemes, using them as inspiration for color scheming and pattern throughout the room. Living room rug ideas range from modern designs to chic options for small spaces, adding statement-making style and dimension. To create a layered rug look, always begin with a base and follow guidelines for choosing and using an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet. Rugs have practical attributes such as being an excellent insulator, softening footfall, and absorbing heat. They can complement décor and define the entire room.
Adding a rug to a bedroom can tie it together, add extra color and visual interest, and make a cold hardwood floor warmer. Rugs can work in nearly any space and can be used to style a space. To layer rugs, choose a muted or vibrant color for a soft, feminine feel, and go big for a larger living room.
When laying area rugs over carpet, be careful as they will simply move. In a living room or family room, ensure that the area rug is large enough to cover at least the front two feet of your sofa and chairs. Rugs provide an extra layer of protection for floors, shielding high-traffic areas from wear and tear, preventing scratches and dents.
Draped over a chair, sofa, or settee, a flat-weave rug can create a fresh look by smoothing it down over the back and seat. Pull colors from one room to harmoniously tie them together with elements from another room, using those elements as a visual pathway throughout the room.

The foyer, entryway, or entrance hall is the space between the outdoors and your home, and it’s challenging to style rugs. How do you hang a rug as a decor?
Velcro is a popular method for hanging a rug on the wall, especially on heavy-weight rugs. It consists of two strips: hook and loop tape. The loop tape should be sewn onto the back of the rug, along the top edge. If the rug is a high-value piece, it should be affixed to a wider piece of fabric. The Velcro loop tape should be stitched to the muslin or cotton, then sewn to the rug. If you’re not comfortable with this task, consider hiring a professional for rug hanging. To hide the stitching, use a heavy cotton thread similar to the rug’s color and carefully stitch the needle between the rug fibers.

I just wanted to say, that I’ve been perusal home decorating shows, youtube articles, tiktoks, you name it, for years!!! Back in the 90s, they used to explain to you how to design and now a days, they just show you the projects they work on without explaining design concepts! I’m in love with your articles, because its back to the 90s, where you teach us why you choose things and how the eye works in spaces. You do talk a lot in your articles, which I typically find annoying with YouTubers, but you really don’t talk about pointless things when you talk. You don’t just blabber, you TEACH. You’re such a great resource. Thank you so much for what you do.
Love the living room rug but I can’t do wool 😞 Do you have another one that looks exactly like it that you’d recommend? Is your outdoor rug a true ivory? I’ve looked at that one but it almost looks like a light light gray. What’s your opinion since you see it in person? Love all your rugs! Great article 👍
Hi Jenna so happy I found your website because we share so many things in common! I’m currently in the process with our builder home as well and loveee your style! Your articles are so helpful to my husband as I ! If you don’t mind me asking what the sqft. of your house are for reference? …. congratulations on your new home❤️ I can’t wait to decorate my home!
I really enjoy all of your articles, your house is coming out soo beautiful! So I’ve been looking at your rugs for awhile, and I’m almost ready to order, but I do want one for my dining room, just because I’d like to make the space a little lighter. I have dark hardwood floors and black chairs. What do you recommend?
Hello sunshine, I hope you’re having a fantastic day. I’ve been hoping you’d do a article like this since perusal the guest bedroom makeover. I’ve always thought about adding a rug in our bedroom but didn’t think it would look good because of the existing carpet. When I saw how incredible yours looked I just had to try it. It’s such a simple yet affordable way to enhance the look of your space. I couldn’t be happier with the way it looks. I have a feeling I’m going to be adding more rugs in my home. Once again you’ve inspired me to make some simple changes that can change the entire look of a room without breaking the bank lol. Thank you soo much for all your sharing all your incredible decorating ideas and tips your the best girl. I hope you’re having a fantastic weekend 😉😊✌
Hi Jenna! Do you think the rug in your entry would be good under a dining table, as far as chairs sliding more easily? I really want a rug to make the room not echo so much, but I am definitely worried about the chairs not sliding easily. The dining table isn’t something that would be used regularly. Thank you, and love your website. ❤️
Hi Jenna Great article always very informative and I love all the picture inserts to give an idea of what you are talking about. I love your home. I was wondering if I would see your master👍🏾 I do have a rug in my dining space but I agree w the chairs going like back n forth off the rug and it’s a bit like “what is that noise” that the chair legs make coming off the rug on to the hardwood floor🤔. Can you link some curtain options for living room.? I need to change out my curtains. Right now I have like burgundy and cream combo but I need a change!!!!!! I don’t have high ceilings so the rods would be like right on the window frame if you know what I mean, but I tend to but 54×84 L. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated I really love your style and you always give great ideas. Oh btw I love your outfit and the up do ponytail 👍🏾 Thanks Jenna
Bought our first home and we are starting from scratch after rv living for 7 yrs. No chairs or tables or anything. There’s bright green carpet (leans a little teal) and I have NO CLUE what or how to match it. Eventually we will rip it up and put vpf down in a dark rustic grayish tone. But for starters…. Help!?
I liked your article because I like you but it is obvious you don’t have kids or if you do they are not normal! I had a jute rug in the kitchen once. I think it eventually started growing some vegetables! I had three kids st the time so to day it didn’t stay clean very long is an understatement! Jute rugs can’t really be cleaned very well. I tried hiding it off, actually that might have been the end of the jute rug. Was many years ago do not really sure. I still wouldn’t buy any of your pretty light colored rugs. I must be a real pig because even though it is just me and my cat, they would all look like hell! Is it just me? I want color and pattern!!
