So here’s what happened when I tried this today. When I put the tea on first and THEN the vinegar/steel wool mixture, it turned a dark gray. When I put the vinegar mixture on and THEN the tea, it turned a rustic, barnwood brownish gray color. I tried it on a piece of Ikea unfinished pine (a shelf that was delivered damaged, which made for great stain testing!). My vinegar mixture was made two days ago, so tomorrow I’m going to test it out again and see what happens.
Please don’t completely seal the jar. The production of iron acetate creates hydrogen gas, which when contained can be unsafe. I use a coffee filter and the lid ring to keep junk out of my acetate stain, but still allow gasses to escape. A latex/nitrile glove works too, as it allows for expansion of the gasses, instead of keeping them compressed in the jar.

How do you deal with any wood filler that might have had to be put not o cover gaps, nail holes and such? When applied as directed the stainable wood filler did not change at all. Is there a solution to this problem? Thought about using grey stain to cover the filler but it is highly visible after dried.
I have been using this method for a while and love it, but can’t seem to get the “grey” look? It just goes a dark gold or brown. I do use lots of tea. Nice work. Straight up and simple. One thing I learned from experience is that if you leave that SOS pad in the vinegar for > a week it turns to rust and you get a messy rust coating on your boards that doesn’t look like anything and doesn’t really clean up. In other words, throw that stuff out after a week if you have leftover. Cheers

My question is… I like your second sample ( without poly ) because it is more gray than brown- I saw you mentioned poly will change the color! Have you tried a poly that has not changed the color? Would you say that the steel wool/vinegar brew discolors not by staining, but by chemical reaction? I ask this because the painting in the first few seconds using the steel wool solution looks clear, but then darkens after a few seconds. Then, what appears to be a brief time lapse at 1:42 shows the wood darkening on its own. This is the look I am trying to achieve with wood for my diorama, which is the black hue (not brown), that signifies severely bleached wood from the elements. Thanks for the clip.
I have also used the same technique on wood species that are low in tannin by pre-treating them with black tea. My only two questions are: 1) did you wash the steel wool with a mild detergent to remove oils? and 2) did you have to make a whole in the lid of the jar to allow for the reaction gas to escape?
