This article discusses the strategies for building a dream audiophile hi-fi or home theater system, including defining goals, setting a budget, and planning to achieve the best outcome. To create a dedicated home theater room, consider designing the best component system that fits and affords your needs. The Sound Organization identifies three basic components of a Hi-Fi system: a source, amplification, and speakers.
A home-theater audio system should not skimp on equipment, with around half of the overall budget allocated to audio gear. The basic 2-Channel home stereo system includes a source (media player), an amplifier, and two speakers. With the myriad of options available today, choosing the right components can be challenging.
To visualize your home theater or media room layout, start by configuring your room size, adding seating, and selecting screen and speaker options. For optimal audiophile sound, make the screen as big as possible, ensure the sound system covers the entire Audible bandwidth, don’t overlook the center channel, and choose your “home theater” setup.
Designing with acoustics in mind is essential, as carpeting, soft furniture, bass traps, and acoustic wall panels can reduce echoes and “slaps” caused by the system. In Dallas, TX, this blog post will delve into the art of designing an audiophile system that will elevate your music experience to new heights.

Buying 2nd hand is excellent advice. Less junk in landfill. Less incentive for manufacturers to make planned obsolescence and entry-level junk. More circular economy. I got a 2nd hand medium level Yamaha 7.1 setup with large L+R front speakers which were a bit beat up. Later I replaced just those two speakers with new.
Man, you hit it on the head. There’s nothing wrong with used, I’ve got two older Harmon Kardons they have HDMI but I’m unsure of the spec so I run the optical from the HTPC straight to the receiver. I spent less than $200 for both of them and one came with an Earthquake sub. I’d love to know more about how HDMI receivers can affect input latency while gaming if you find some time to give an opinion and advice on what brand offers the best throughput I would appreciate it for sure.
Got myself a JBL Bar 1000 open-box at best buy for like 600 or 700 bucks last year. Wireless surround is super nice and sure it doesn’t sound as good as a modular atmos setup…but it’s pretty damn good. Until I can afford a home and have a room/basement to really deck out as a home theater, the sound bar will do just fine
What’s your thoughts on doing a projector set up for a hundred people but how do I figure out the sound should I go through HDMI EArc to create a Dolby sound… Or is it non-practical so instead go with two large powerful speakers stereo and to subwoofers… But the question is for this type of event should I use a mixer or a receiver, The projector I will be using is the horizon ultra
Well, I just built an entry level ‘proper’ Atmos 5.2.2 for just $350 by buying an Onkyo SR494 but I had to hook up my old PoS speakers to do that. I really do recommend this because the Atmos is truly a step up from basic peasant AC3, (the height websites really are all they cranked up to be) and it beats any soundbar 6 ways to Sunday. Besides, then you can get whatever speakers you want when you get the money.
Very nice and all but, can you please give me advice on just a projector with screen for a 3 year old’s room. That I’m trying for her to learn her Spanish. And just for perusal movies cartoons. Any help? Plus please it’s just on a disability check that I’ll be buying. So the less the better. And do you have anyone also that can come and install? And yes I’ll pay also. Ty
Hi Chris, I am a big fan of yours. ive been perusal you website for almost 5 years and I enjoy perusal your home theater articles which gives me more idea and knowledge since I am a IT technician. I need advive as i have a Sony 5.1 home theater speaker system with toslink and a ARC HDMI, A Benq projector (TK850i), mediaplayers are Nvidia pro and Amazon fire stick. I need to know how to connect ARC HDMI form my media players to Sony 5.1 home theater system to get Dolby sound, is there any device available?
My parents got a home that was an architects first project in the mid 90’s. There are 4 in ceiling speakers hard wired to an RCA jack port in the living room. Everything else in the house is over-built or of high quality. Is it worth looking for a compatible receiver or should they start from scratch? They would probably be happy with a soundbar, but it feels like a waste of potentially great speakers that are already installed.
You showed a Yamaha home theater pack there a few times and i happened to find a guy near me selling what looked like exactly that kit, at least the speakers were and it has a Yamaha RX-V377 with it for $125 in good condition. Figured it was a steal and way better than any sound bar we were affording for $200. My wifes just going to have to trust me on this lolll
I have went from AVR and speakers in 2002 to an Nakamichi shockwafe SSE ARC 9.2 4. 1000 watt soundbar in my basement. For $1,100. I was more than happy. That’s i purchased another one in my master bedroom in 2019. In 2023 I heard about the Nakamichi Dragon at CES 2024. I pre-order it, Spent the $3500 unheard unseen and unreviewed. I had to wait 5 months to get it. I couldn’t be happier, i give it 99.95 out of 100.
Awesome article once again. I agree with the 2nd hand stuff. I started with a reciever for just €80 and it still powers my Klipsch system. Started with bookshelfs for 2.0. Added a 12″ sub and after a time bought a center speaker. Then came the towers and the bookshelfs went to the rear. Now it’s an awesome system! A little tip: sometimes stores have some good outlet or (not used) returned products. This way I got my Klipsch RP-6000’s for less then €600. Even today they are still going above €1000 for the two.
I’ve been perusal this website for 6 or 7 years now since I started learning about 4k projectors and I just love it, I feel like you don’t really farm a ton of articles to make more money (which is ok anyway we all need money) you just do the ones that you really like and for stuff you care about. I can appreciate that. I just wish 4k projects came further than they have, seems like they’ve been pretty stagnant for the last 6 years unless you got tons to drop on a laser projector which don’t seem that much different either. Anyway, any upcoming articles or things you’re gonna branch into? maybe figuring out which popcorn reallyyyyyyy tastes like movie popcorn? lol
If you buy used HT equipment from somewhere nearby I recommend picking it up yourself if possible. Not only will you save money on shipping (subwoofers are big and heavy so shipping might cost you quite a lot extra) but you will also have the chance to test the device(s) before finalizing the deal, given that the seller agrees to take the time etc. When I picked up my speakers and subwoofer the seller had them hooked up to his own reciever so that I could listen to all websites to verify them working fine before we packed everything up.
My speakers and subs are nearly $60K not counting the TV and receiver. There’s always a way to spend more. I’ve enjoyed the journey up to this point starting with my dad’s decent home-theater-in-a-box back in the mid-90s. I honestly kept it extremely cheap until 2019 when I bought a bunch of speakers and subs totalling $2K.
Chris m8 thx you very much, i was uneducated on the subject of home theater and audio in general, your articles gave me better understanding of what exactly i was looking for plus general knowledge about audio. Thx to you i found someone who is selling exactly what i need if not better for a really good price.🙏
Great info CM! Not bashing on your article, just adding some detail… Home Theater setup starts at 5.1! Soundbar w/woofer is just that, a soundbar w/woofer. Nothing about that says Home Theater. As far as Budget Home Theater goes, that all depends on the room its going in. You can have a budget 5.1, budget 7.1, budget atmos, etc.
@The Core Audios, Javeed sir, I can’t tell you how much I love your YouTube website. Your content is so useful to me, and I’ve learned so much about audio from you. I’m also an audiophile, and I’m planning to contact you in three years to get your help setting up my dream home theater. Every time I see your articles, I’m motivated to work hard and achieve my dream. Thanks for your time making on these articles.
In my experience, ur demo is only fulfilled my stereo music expectation. me too visited many places like Bengaluru, coimbatore and chennai too for home theatre experience. most of them r failed in me. After demo, u didn’t compel or trying to convince me to take some system to make business. u r the person not doing business for money making only, imo. even u r educating customer’s too. i know that many people r charging too for the same. consulting charges like. so only u r getting good projects for ur honesty. keep it up throughout ur life. may god bless u and ur family good health and wealth, javid bro. and brother too. i understand that my dream home theatre system is not an immediate one, as it’s budget won’t be affordable right now. Surely i will make a bench mark home theatre system with u, as i am planning to build a new house in nxt few years.
Hi, may I know why frame rates of a projector is completely ignored cuz this projector supports upto 60fps @ all articlequalities. When compared 120hz refresh rates are far more supirior than 60hz RR. 3D is always put in full HD where it might look very bad when it runs 3D full hd @ 60Hz. 3D 1080p with 120+ Hz refresh rates are uncomparable. MEMC just fills the frames but upto 60Hz if it is a 60Hz panel. This projector costs around 6lhks and I believe Sony 4K projector with almost same pricing is more supirior. Epson LS1200 has amazing picture quality but doesn’t support 3D. Like Why?? The Set-up deserves more:hand-orange-covering-eyes:
Good work Sir. But I am a bit skeptical about your choice of equipments in a mid to high budget builds like these. I havent quite heard Magnets so I will give them the benefit of doubt. In such budgets, I would look at a line up consisting of B&W ( probably their CT 7 series) or their 700 series for the fronts with a matching center. For the Sub, given your customer likes to listen to music equally, I would look at a REL model line up ( HT series) for their fast, tactile and musical nature which equally works well for movies. For the projection, while Optoma is good ( I personally use an Optoma UHD) in such builds, a JVC or a Sony is the go to choice for enthusiasts, isnt it ? For processing, again while the Marantz 7706 is a great processor, I would go above a notch and pick something from the Anthem/ Arcam line-up ( I use a 8500h btw)which offers additional website processing and known for their excellent room correction ( ARC and Dirac) which are must better than the Audyssey XT32 as far as I have seen. I am sure you seem to take great care with acoustics which matter the most but high end budgets need high end equipments too is my take. I wold love to soon see your new project with JBL synthesis and Trinnov ( Customers from Coimbatore perhaps 😀 ) All the best !
Awesome project!🔥 I have a few questions. 1) What is the ceiling height of this room? 2) How high are each of the platform raisers for the seating area? 3) What is the distance from the screen to the first row of seating? 4) What is the distance between each row of seats 5) What is the distance from the wall to the screen ( distance behind the screen)? I’m a huge fan of your work! 😀
Good work and technically informative but just need to know what was the reverb/decay time provided for this theater since the client is 2 chanel musical listening it’s very important and big challenges same way need to know whether both subwoofers phase/time blend with FR/FL or not Regarding prepro if AVR is using preout for external amplification then as you said 50db – 80db issues will remain on AVR since the same brand AVR DAC is same on prepro will it make any sound signature differences
I have been following since a year or two and I am kind of audiophile and crazy on the audio stuffs. Appreciate the work you and your team put in to this project and it speaks. I mean I could hear the quality of the recorded sound in my Hi-Res headset. Awesome ! This setup is still my dream hope this will become reality soon.
