This video demonstrates how to finish vinyl plank flooring to exterior doors using various methods. The first step is to cut the planks longer to extend under the door and use a bevelled trim to cover the edge. The gap between the exterior door threshold and luxury vinyl plank flooring or any flooring can be a concern due to moisture infiltration. To make the transition from vinyl plank to tile, leave a gap between the two types during the installation process.
After installing the floating floor, focus on the pivotal moment: installing the new threshold. Undercut the door casing and leave an exp gap up to the door threshold. Cover the gap with shoe, which is half the width of the vertical door trim. At an exterior door, you are not transitioning, but finishing, so use shoe between the casings. You could also use 1/4 round if needed.
Trim molding not only adds a finishing touch but also protects the edges of your floating floor. Secure it in place with finishing nails or using 1/4 round if needed. It is important not to go under the sill, as thicker trim may be needed at the door. Avoid using flat bottom gables with scissor trusses.
