How To Build Roof Peaks With Exterior Soffit Lighting?

This video provides tips and techniques on installing exterior soffit lighting, including drilling a 3-inch hole for the lighting, avoiding joists in the eave, and connecting the black, white, and ground wires together. The installation process can be done in the peak of the roof, soffits, roofs, eaves, and porch overhangs to create a downlighting effect. Soffit lighting can be installed inside your home or outdoors, and it can enhance the exterior of your home and increase security by illuminated dark areas.

To install soffit lighting, drill a 3-inch hole for the lighting and avoid the joists in the eave. Reach in through the hole, grab the wires, and pull them out. If you find it difficult, use a coat hanger to grab the wires. Connect the black, white, and ground wires together and close the exterior soffit lighting.

Soffit lighting is downward lighting involving a wall or vertical position from the ceiling or other position mounted above the target area. Examples in outdoor usage include adding exterior soffit lights to soffits at the top of a 2 story peak. To do this, cut a hole out of your ceiling or soffit material, connect the wiring in a junction box according to code requirements, and push your wiring into the junction box.

What lights to use for soffits?

Can lights, also known as recessed lighting, are a popular type of soffit lighting that takes up no space on the overhang, making it completely discrete until the switch is pressed. They are placed inside a cylindrical can made of metal or plastic, placed into a hole in the ceiling, with all electrical wiring and the bulb up in the ceiling. The edge of the can is rimmed with a trim, which allows you to match the light fixture to the aesthetic of your home.

LED can lights are a practical way to light up porches, gardens, or walls, providing clear, strong lighting for the entire yard. They can be spaced out evenly across the ceiling or roof, providing bright, even lighting. LED bulbs last longer than incandescents and are more energy efficient, saving you money and time.

How far apart should you put soffit lights?

In order to calculate the optimal placement for recessed light fixtures in order to achieve accent lighting, it is recommended that the distance between fixtures be set at a range of 4 to 6 feet. In order to achieve uniform illumination throughout the room, it is recommended that the ceiling height be divided by two in order to determine the distance between each light in the recessed lighting layout.

Do soffit lights need to be wet rated?

When choosing between Wet and Damp Rated LED Pot Lights, consider the location of the fixtures. Wet Rated lights are suitable for areas exposed to water, like soffits or showers, while Damp Rated lights are suitable for moderate humidity areas like basements or laundry rooms. IC Rating, or “Insulation Contact”, indicates that these lights can be installed in direct contact with insulation without overheating or starting a fire. This is crucial to prevent potential fire hazards.

In summary, Wet Rated Pot Lights are designed for areas where they will be in direct contact with water, while Damp Rated Pot Lights can withstand mild to moderate humidity levels but cannot endure direct exposure to water. Understanding the difference between these options is essential when selecting LED Pot Lights for your space.

Are soffit lights a good idea?

Soffit lighting is an architectural feature on the exterior of a home that covers the underside of the roof, eaves, or porch overhang. These lights are recessed and downlighting, illuminating downward towards the ground. They are often used by homeowners to highlight architectural features, increase home security, or enhance the visual appeal of their homes. Soffit lighting is important because it increases the safety and security of your home or business, making it less likely for people to break in or loiter. Soffit floodlights can further enhance security features, providing peace of mind.

Soffit lighting also increases property value, as homeowners are always seeking ways to add value to their properties. It has numerous benefits, including improving the overall appearance of your property, adding property value, and highlighting specific elements and features with soffit spotlights. Additionally, soffit lighting improves security, providing peace of mind for homeowners.

Astoria Lighting Co. offers an extensive selection of exterior soffit lighting fixtures that can elevate any property, add security, and increase value. By understanding the importance and benefits of soffit lighting, homeowners can determine if it is the right outdoor lighting option for their home or business.

Where do you put exterior soffit lights?

Soffit lights are discreet and low-profile lighting fixtures that fit snugly on the underside of soffit ceilings, installed in overhangs. They can be used to accentuate exterior features like statues, wall fixtures, doors, and patio areas, creating a beautiful outdoor atmosphere. The subtle glow of soffit lighting can also increase security by allowing you to see anyone or anything outside your home after dark and preventing break-ins. A well-lit garden reduces the likelihood of thieves and intruders attempting a break-in due to the lack of privacy.

How bright should outdoor soffit lights be?

The brightness and color temperature of outdoor soffit lighting have a significant impact on the ambiance and functionality of a given space. Therefore, it is recommended that fixtures with a luminosity of between 1000 and 3000 lumens be selected.

How far apart should outdoor lighting be?

Outdoor landscape lights should be placed six to eight feet apart to ensure a bright and well-lit pathway. If you already have dimmer or overhead lights, you can extend them wider. However, if you plan to include lights as a safety feature, consider the brightness when deciding how frequently to place them. Electric pathway lights are usually twice as bright, so you’ll need more solar lights to achieve the same effect.

Solar lights may perform better or worse based on the amount of shade in the area, but they should receive at least 6-8 hours of full sun daily for optimal results. The quality of the lights is also crucial, as cheap or cheap models may not work correctly or produce a weaker light.

How many lumens do I need for outdoor soffit lights?

Soffit lights’ brightness depends on the size of the area they are illuminating and the type of light fixture used. Smaller areas like walkways, steps, or patios require low-intensity lights with a 200-400 lumen count. Larger areas like decks or driveways may require more powerful lights with a 500-1000 lumen count. For a subtle effect and a beautiful nighttime appearance, opt for soffit lights with a lumen rating of no more than 800, creating a soft, gentle light.

How do you position exterior lights?

In order to guarantee optimal illumination, it is recommended to install one light source in close proximity to the entryway or garage door at a height of approximately one-third of the door’s height, and to place one light on either side of the door at a height of approximately one-quarter of the door’s height.

What is the alternative to soffit lights?

Ground mounted lights are often the best way to light the exterior of a home or building, as they are more efficient than soffit lights. To learn more about the differences between soffit and ground mounted lights, contact a local business that has been lighting up Nashville since 2012. Their team has years of experience creating and installing unique outdoor lighting designs, providing maintenance and repair services to homes and businesses across Middle Tennessee. They have been voted 1st in Nashville House and Home for landscape lighting for four consecutive years and Best of Houzz for the last three years.

What will the best position be for the light outside?

Outdoor porch lights and wall lights can add a touch of elegance to your home’s front porch or doorway area. Place them above shoulder height to keep direct light out of your eyes and help with tasks like unlocking the door. A good rule of thumb is to choose fixtures about 1/4 to 1/3 the height of your front door and hang them around 6 feet from the ground.

Garage lights are a safe and stylish way to arrive home at night. Place outdoor sconces on the outside pillars of your double or multiple garages to cover the entire area. Alternatively, opt for a flood light or motion sensor outdoor light above the garage. An RLM fixture, also known as barnlight or gooseneck light, is a stylish and versatile way to bring light to your garage.

Hanging lights, such as outdoor pendants, flush mount lights, or fans, can help your outdoor space shine. Fans help keep things cool in warmer climates, while pendant and flush mount lights brighten up your outdoor space and make it feel like a cozy extension of your home. Consider a fixture from the Climates™ collection, which uses a composite material with UV protectant to create an anti-fading finish resistance to acidic and alkali elements, corrosion, and rust.

  • Good article preciate it, I’m a apprentice electrician going on 8yrs I’ve been on plenty residential/commercial jobs I’ve seen it all but one thing I haven’t is soffit lighting & I know this is a new thing people are starting to do. I do a lot of side work & customers are starting to want this new lighting & the company I work for has never done this before.. now I can make some more money off soffit lighting lol, video was easy to understand preciate it again

  • I noticed these lights are for Indoors only. These lights do not have a Wet or Damp rating to be used in such areas inside the home, let alone outside. How did you decide to use these outdoors without an Exterior or Wet/Damp, etc rating? We’ve were looking for the same type of lights, but in black and also came across these. We passed on them due to not having the aforementioned ratings. This was a safety concern we had due to rain and humidity in Texas area. Looking forward to your insight for your decision. Much appreciated

  • Hey good article thanx. 👍🏻 sparky questions – just hooked up 3 of these to the existing wiring from a hardwired direct from the panel 15 app breaker. I have three of these lights and motion light, while Daisy chain together direct to the panel. No switch in between. Is that OK? I’m wondering if a switch is needed for safety or any reason since I can control the lights with a timer at an app motion sensor was hardwired it had power all the time I don’t think I need to go to a switch first. But for some reason I’m questioning myself, I do that often lol✅

  • I Replaced My existing outside lights with the Ultra thin 6″. Wondering if you had this issue. I set them to blue and turned them on before I went to bed woke up and they were off. Made sure I didn’t enable any schedules and the same thing the next night. I’m going to try half-brightness and see what happens. Let me know if you heard of this Thanks
