How To Build A Wood Railing Within Concrete Steps?

To install a railing on concrete steps, follow these steps:

  1. Use the Patriot Post Mount if there are no existing rails.
  2. Drill into the concrete using a masonry drill bit.
  3. Mount the bases of the railings and attach them using an Allen wrench.
  4. Install cable rails for modern stair railings using Kee Klamp fittings and galvanized pipe.
  5. Inspect the location and ensure the type of railing fits.
  6. Decide which point your handrail will start.
  7. Install a safety handrail for your stairway.
  8. Measure the existing steps to give the iron shop the necessary measurements to create the railing.
  9. Use a base plate at the bottom of the posts and tapcon or expansion bolt into the concrete.
  10. Use a railing/post system that bolts to the side.
  11. Prepare the concrete and place post holders.
  12. Drill the concrete.
  13. Fit the post holder.
  14. Attach the wooden railing.
  15. Mark holes for the flange on the ground or wall.
  16. Drill holes for anchors.
  17. Attach the posts directly to the sides of the steps, extending down as far as possible for more bearing.
  18. Use plastic shims to level the steps.
  19. Drill the hold using a drill bit through the bottom hole and pound in the desired size.

  • I built a set of these rails this month. They are identical to this article and they look outstanding. I really appreciate the instructions! Here are some extra tips: – Avoid the pressure treated lumber if you can. It may very likely twist or warp as it dries out. Use redwood or cedar. And of course treat it with an exterior finish when you’re done. – I built the backyard rail first, learned lessons, then built the front steps. Front came out professional. Many compliments from neighbors. – The concrete steps are likely NOT level, even, or the same height. Don’t cut all the posts to 36″ and assume things will come out level and proportional. – Cut your first post to 36 inches. When setting the second post, mark where the top horizontal 2×4 will hit it when perfectly level. Cut the post 1″ above that line. If your concrete isn’t level, this will hide the error at the bottom of the railing. – Before tightening the brackets securely to the concrete anchors, loosen the nuts and use the short/straight edge of a long 2×4 to wiggle your post until they are both perfectly aligned to each other. Lock down the brackets, then you can install the bottom/top cross beams. – It was much easier to get the top cross-beam “L” 2x4s flush by installing the horizontal piece first, then installing the vertical piece to it. – Rebar rusts very badly. My home depot keeps the 10 ft sticks outdoors and they are basically orange and filthy. Paint them black before installing them — the first coat should be a rust reformer.
