Lines play a crucial role in interior design, as they can visually stretch or shorten a room, influence perception within a space, create an illusion of more spaciousness, and lead the eye. They can also be used to direct focus, define boundaries, create pattern, rhythm, or texture, and give the illusion of added height.
In interior design, the intelligent use of lines can change our perception of spatial relationships. Vertical lines create the illusion of added height and make a low ceiling appear much higher than it is. To use lines effectively, follow these steps:
- Select or highlight the text you want to use line spacing with and click the Line Spacing option from the menu.
- Change “Auto” to any point or value of spacing that you wish to pursue.
- Select the paragraphs you want to change and choose Justification from the Paragraph panel menu or from the Control panel menu. For Auto Leading, specify a specific value.
Lines can also be used to create zones in a kitchen, visually stretching or shortening a room, and influencing perception within a space. By carefully selecting and adjusting the spacing in certain parts of the text, designers can create beautiful interiors with a dash of drama using nothing but lines.
In summary, lines play a significant role in interior design, providing a way to visually stretch or shorten spaces, create illusions, and create visually appealing spaces. By following these guidelines, interior designers can create beautiful interiors with a dash of drama using only lines.

What is spacing in interior design?
Space planning in interior design involves organizing and arranging available space within a room or building to create a functional, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing environment. It involves careful consideration of furniture, fixtures, and other elements to create an efficient environment for occupants. The process involves determining the room’s purpose, such as a living room, office, or bonus room, and considering the number of people in the room and their movement.
How do I change line spacing in design?
InDesign automatically calculates and sets the line spacing to 15 points. To modify the interline spacing, simultaneously depress the Alt and Up or Down Arrow keys. The spacing exhibits a 2-point discrepancy, which can be rectified by navigating to the Preferences option in the Edit menu and selecting the Units and Increment option from the ensuing drop-down list.
What is the rule of spacing in design?
The fundamental rule of design is that internal space should be equal to or greater than external space, ensuring elements are perceived as distinct yet part of a cohesive group. Gestalt principles suggest that proximity of elements influences how we perceive their relationship, with elements spaced closely together being seen as part of a group and those farther apart as separate. By adjusting internal and external spacing, designers can influence the perception of elements as individual entities or part of a larger group. The 8-point grid system is a widely embraced standard in design, favored for its simplicity and scalability across various devices and screen sizes.
What are the 7 principles of interior design?
Interior design principles are guidelines used by designers to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces. These principles include balance, harmony, rhythm, proportion and scale, emphasis, contrast, and details. Balance is crucial in creating an equilibrium by evenly distributing furniture and decorative objects within a room. It involves careful analysis of line, shape, color, and texture of objects. There are three types of balance: formal, informal, and radial. These principles can be applied to any room in a home, from the living room to the bathroom.

What is the line spacing for design system?
Line spacing in UX design should be at least a space-and-a-half within paragraphs, 1. 5 times the font size, followed by two times the font size, between letters, and between words, at least 0. 12 times the font size, and 0. 16 times the font size. These guidelines are not laws, but they provide a moral obligation for design teams to create accessible designs. The shift towards more accessible design starts with UX designers like yourself, and it is crucial to discuss this issue with your team at the start of a UX design project, considering the client’s brief, style guide, design system, demographic, and other design elements. Adjusting line spacing later on is possible, as it is not set in stone.

Examples include a square drawn on paper, which is formed by a series of lines.
Geometric shapes, or mechanical shapes, are drawn using a ruler or compass and include squares, circles, triangles, ellipses, parallelograms, and stars. These elements are the materials from which all designs are built.

Brilliant! I feel we all watch your articles and are amazed at what you teach us. These rules make our homes “flow” and feel thought about. Not easy for someone who loves antiques/thrift shop furniture but now I have the key tools to see which pieces will fit in our home. Thanks so much. Kind regards from England!
Coffee tables are dumb. If you want to drink coffee and talk, go to the dining room, where people can see each other’s faces. 2. Like all other horizontal surfaces, coffee tables will just collect clutter. 3. They make it harder to get into and out of the couch. 4. People bark their shins on sharp corners.
This is how to decorate in America. In the Uk t flat paint finishes are much more high end. Gloss is not fashionable at all. Eggshell is used for trim but some paint lines are meant to use all over on the trim as well. As for the rules for coffee table and end tables, homes in the Uk are typically much smaller than US homes a big sofa and a big coffee table would leave no room for anything else in your room. Furniture is placed where there is room for it. This looks lovely but is very bland and uniform.
It was a lovely compilation of picturesque examples that gave vision to the narrative and done in a professional and cosy way… BUT and it really is a dinger for me as I know some of the people who put the ‘hard-yard-work’ into a variety of those rooms, and while not necessary to credit each one – it would be respectful to have that in your show notes. If you have, and I didn’t see it within a link- I do apologise.
I enjoy all your informative articles, but I have to disagree re coffee table height. Our coffee table is about 8″ higher than the sofa cushions. It has two drop leaves, and it is used for card games, board games, jigsaw puzzles and casual meals. It’s high enough that we can pull up low stools to gather around – a perfect setup for family times.
I’m going to break your first rule on purpose. I have a sectional sofa that is 100″ long and 1/3 is the lounging section. I have a round coffee table that is 28″ wide that will fit perfectly. The sofa section is 2/3 of the length, so roughly 66 inches. Anything larger would not be usable by anyone on the lounging section.
…I detest those LOW Coffee Tables….Tables at 17 -18 ‘ IS NOT high enough, and I don’t care if it ” is the same height as the couch cushion.” …. ; If you have a higher sitting dofa… that LOW Coffee Table looks silly ! …Did you take into accoubt that many sofas sit higher, and need a higher Coffee Table…??? ..and,having a higher Coffee Table means better functionality and no ” bending over ” to pick up your beverage etc. Also nice to actually use for playing Board Ganes, Cards. Etc. I think this ” Rule ” is outdated and people should use whatever height works for THEM. By the way, most End Tables are also too low, if one has a higher sitting sofa… which is actually a thing, so again… it’s not a ” Rule “. How many times are we going to hear the same things… the Curtain rod height, .. The Rug thing. …..Same things, over and over.
