Before purchasing a new front entry door, it is essential to measure your existing door opening to get a rough estimate of the door size. To ensure a perfect fit, follow these steps:
- Measure the width and height of your old door. Round these numbers up to full inches to find the size of the replacement door you will need.
- For prehung doors, accurately follow how to measure your rough opening and jamb depth to choose.
- Start by measuring the width and height of the existing door slab. Round each number up to the nearest inch to determine the nominal door size you’ll need.
- For single doors and doors with sidelites, measure the frame size of your current door and use those dimensions when ordering your new door.
- Measure the width of the exterior door. To find the door height, measure from the top of the door panel to the bottom on the edge of the door.
- Measure the door thickness. Measure the existing door (if it fits well in the frame) inside the door frame. Measure the door opening brick to brick. For exterior doors, measure from the bottom of the threshold to the top edge of the horizontal door jamb. For interior doors, measure from the floor to the top.
To measure the width of the door, use a tape measure to get the door’s width from the bottom, middle, and top areas. To measure the height of your external door, measure both vertical sides of the frame from the inside and measure the middle too.
