I love how the designers really put effort into making the vehicle look like something a 6 yr old would make out of legos… none of the design elements go together! There’s just random pieces and bits of design all mismatched and chunked together, truly something you would see from a mismatched lego creation a child made.
I’m astonished as to how or why BMW is convinced that making their cars look like off-brand angry birds is a good idea. Every new one that comes out looks fuglier than the last one, but it’s not making the earlier fugly models look any better either. I miss my first real car which was a certified pre-owned 428i xDrive finished in imperial blue with the m-sport package that I bought my senior year of college. I traded it in for an Audi A5 Sportback, but kept tabs on it because I wanted to buy it back one day. The next owner totaled it less than a year later in Nov. 2022 so I can’t buy it back, and I won’t even entertain the idea of buying another one for a long, long, loooonnnnggg time – it’s somewhat heartbreaking if I’m honest.

But ever since the 707 dropped, the DBX became more competitive with the likes of the Cayenne Turbo GT, Urus, Bentayga Speed, and the new Purosangue. But again, BMW did miss the mark by not making a new M supercar to succeed the M1. Sure, there is the new 3.0 CSL, but that’s just an M4 under the skin with exclusive upgrades, details, and slightly more power than the already limited M4 CSL. As for the XM itself, its design is definitely polarizing, to say the least, although it does look menacing in red, blue, or black. It also looks A LOT better than the iX. You won’t be mistaking the XM for any other vehicle on the road that’s for sure. xD
Just watched a article about the Alfa Romeo SZ and on the first glance both the Alfa and this BMW seem to have in common a certain exaggeration designwise. But on the second glance you can see the completely opposite motives of their very designers: Those of the SZ just said: “We wanna do it exactely like that FULL STOP.” … More than 30 years later on the other side of the Alps: “… … … … …” … there was just despair.
I’m not sure what Marcus Syring (head of design for BMW, previously Mini and Motoradd) was thinking when he signed off on this design? But the deliveries and sales figures on it are going to come back and bite them. In Q3 of 2023, deliveries of the XM amounted to roughly 4500, whilst sales of BMWs X3 to X5 range exceeded 70k in the first quarter of 2023. The figures speak for themselves. Hopefully, this SUV will gracefully fade out of the market.
wait .. why is nobody mentioning that the 0-60 time is obviously tested down a small hill!? its not a straight, you can clearly see that 😅 ..and in the second test, surely totally not on purpose, you arent driving the same “straight” just in the other diection, you are starting at the top of the hill again 😂. It really takes effort to make a car where absolutely nothing, NOT A SINGLE THING, in the design goes together. Nothing is the design seems to be in harmony. It looks absolutely rancid and I am pretty sure that I am not overreacting when I say that I amconvinced that I would have done 100% a better job at designing it than those “””designers””” at BMW. And I am a gardener for god’s sake! They should really be ashamed of themselves for even green lighting this design at all. If they continue this trend into the future it is safe to say that I will not dearly miss them, but instead I am incredibly glad if they ever go bancrupt and the brand is finally put out of it’s misery, cause we will then no longer have to be tortured with designs like this. All will remain is remembering the good old days, where they actually cared about how the car looked, where they put a Hofmeister Knick in the windows. And I would be absolutely fine with that.
For me, the looks have definitely grown on me a lot! However the marketing for this car is all completely wrong. I think it needs to be more special and more of an ‘individual’ car. They should start by keeping the XM Label as the ‘base’ model for the same price as the standard XM. They should also incorporate ALOT more BMW individual colours, and many different interior options such as the kyalami orange you can get in the M3 then it would be a more attractive car on paper.
Question: for ICE, its about power, torque, smoothness, efficiency, tuning etc. so a premium justified when buying a luxury or high performance car. With EV’s, luxury or otherwise, non luxury brands share similar performance, efficiency etc. So in an EV world, what makes a n EV porsche or mercedes worth the premium? is it now just down the chassis tuning, in case tech and interior design?

Weird design, the shell aims to be quite clean and calm, but then they stuck all these trim lines, badges on there. These stuck on gold trim lines and weird badge placement is something I would see on a french car but this thing. They stuck all the design ” features” BMW has on one SUV. Also the grill and exhaust areas look like huge stuck on masks the rest of it cant handle. This powertrain could have easely fit into an X5, no need for this special M thing nobody likes. If I had to get one my configuration would be as simple as possible ( silver on black, good wheels) and then remove the stuck on trim and badges to keep it as cleans as the concept. And of course its too heavy, 2,7 tons is a loaded van or small truck. You can see how the 200 EH horses are struggeling wth this thing…
I dunno what the rest of the world is feeling about that new dashboards of BMW but I feel like they place those “ipads” in there to make their cars loosing their IDs in exchange with luxury! The car is an outrageous beast, with overwhelming technology and luxury. But is it the right car to celebrate 50 years of M brand ?? Not at all ; an X5M is faster, the XM is not like an 800 hp SUV. BMW would need a proper sports / super car to celebrate 50 years of M power icons; something like a 911 GT3 RS, AMG GTR,or even entry level or even full fat hypercar a new M1 . Moreover they have now too many M5s and M4s variants, and the M8 is just a luxury GT that is crazy fast.

I’m getting a range rover 2014-15 model which one should I get full Range Rover oe Range Rover sport? sport is 5k cheaper. Is very bold design and I like the way it looks. But they rushed to release as I think they could have done a better Hybrid setup. Charging is slow, gives very little mileage from the heavy car. They should have made a proper hybrid car with 850hp to carry all that weight. M cars supposed to be bold, stand out with performance.

Looking at BMW cars, the X5, 3 series and 5 series are the only good looking cars, XM is horrendous, I don’t know how BMW designers still have their jobs. I agree with Matt – this should have been a supercar if BMW’s M division are going to build a specialist, limited edition car.
Leaving aside the grill which is “strange” at best, I find it so strange to go for a gas guzzling V8 and a electric motor to get to 2.8 Tons instead of using a more nimble but brilliant straight 6 from the M4 and a better electric unit. Probably better emissions and handling, and even usable full EV driving for city.
I have an F90 M5 Competition which checks all the same boxes but adds all wheel drive to make the power a bit more manageable. But I agree with everything you said in this article. The M5 is a car that can do it all. Comfortable, quiet family hauler, but also rowdy af when you hit the go bonkers button. Highly recommended to anyone with the means and the F10 is a great way to get a very similar experience for a lot less money.
I owned one of these for a few years, bought it used at 31k miles and sold it at 64k. Was very reliable for me and I loved it, but I got out of mine before the typical things started going bad. These are getting easier to get into, but they will bankrupt you quickly when things start breaking on them – and they will.
Agreed, the F10 M5 is a great looking car and it’s a monster. For me, it’s just too big and I’ve heard too many horror stories about the N63 and S63 to want one. I’ve owned an E46 M3 for 10 years. I just bought an M2 Competition to replace it. For me, the M2 is the perfect size and it’s also a lot of fun to drive. Of course, it has none of the bells and whistles of the M5 (or even the M3/M4), but it serves a different purpose anyway. If I need space, I drive the ML350.
Your article of you driving and reviewing the M5 before you had your frozen was what sold me on it. Bought my LCI 1.5 years ago and I love it. So much car for the money. It’s 2 cars in one. Quiet, comfortable and luxurious. And an absolute monster in sport mode. Cant beat that plus a simple tune and downpipes add 100+ whp. Hands down one of the best bang for your buck on the market.
I love what you have done with the M5 Brotha. I too believe the F10 M5, or F10 chassis in general is pretty sleek. I have a white F10 550i M-Sport 6spd manual and I just love getting into the car to drive it. I’ve done a few mods to the car, cf lip, diffuser, cf N63intake setup, and few other small ecstatic changes. I wish I could share photos on the article post. I absolutely love driving this beast.
From my own experience all I can say is I agree with everything he has said in this article. Also it’s great to see someone try and warn/ educate the younger generation to respect the power this car beholds because he’s not lying he’s 100% correct and these cars will get away from you in rwd. Modern BMWs have become utterly hideous. Those huge grills and tablets inside make the cars simply repulsive. This one….is something else. Looks good, has the proper engine, analog gauges and let us feel an unparaleed driving experience so far. Those were one of the best last years of the moto industry, without this common and doubtful, eco-electric trend involved.
I have a 2014 m5. I had a fender rear ended another car at 26mi/hr. It cost $26k to repair the body/paint to bring it to OEM quality again. 3 months later engine seized at 83k miles. It cost me $22k to replace the engine with a used one and it took me 7 months to find a good engine. Most used engines I found didn’t meet my standards or failed the hp/tq/leak tests. I test drove hundreds of cars during this time. It is the best car I have driven and couldn’t find another car that driver better and costs under $150k. Ended up buying a new x3m to fill the void while waiting for the repairs and sold it as soon as I got my M5 back. Bottom line is, make sure you don’t go bankrupt maintaining this. They are cheap to buy but not to maintain or repair. Tune with caution. Before power, upgrade suspension and never downgrade the brakes. That’s the most important thing for anyone who is not at least a semi-pro racer. Car has so much power, You will never be able to put down the stock power on the street without warning up the tires on a perfect drag strip.
I have an E60 535i M-sport 6-speed manual with a tune. I drove an F10 M5 a few years ago expecting it to be my next BMW and was very disappointed. It felt huge, had no road feel – I felt I was driving an SUV. It couldn’t really put the power down. I got back in my E60 and it felt so much more nimble and light with so much more feel – like a BMW should – and so I still have it. The F10 does look better though especially from the side view.
Great car overall but from experience stay the fuck away from anything that is beyond a stage 1 tune. Fuel economy and comfort are great tho but reliability is shit once you start fucking with thinkin youre smarter than engineers at bmw. Great bang for buck but i think for the average person an f8x m3/4 is a better buy. Bmw is know for inline 6😉
I am not a fan of modern vehicles due to the way they look, especially electric/hybrid vehicles. There’s something that makes those cars incredibly ugly, but F10 generation is one of those vehicles that I really like and imho it’s one of the best BMWs made in terms of design. Other new BMWs I’d go for are the 3,5 or 2 series equipped with B58/S58 engines.
Can even go with the 550i if you still want the twin turbo v8 bit for a little less. Here in Texas I’ve seen 550i’s for 18k-23k from 56k miles up to 115k…and if you want a v8 suv they have the x5 50i with the same twin turbo engine I believe. Just make sure to go with a 2014 or better for either car, those are the ones with the upgraded “n63tu” engine so a little more reliable than the 2013 and older
I have to agree with your assessment,…especially after owning,…a 2012 F10 550 xDrive,…and later upgrading to a 2013 F10 M5. BMW missed a great opportunity in not releasing an xDrive F10 M5 in the final chapter of the F10 chassis. Now,…wait until you upgrade,…again,…to the F90 M5. It may very well possibly be the best BMW,…North of the G05 M550! So, long live the F10 M5!,…long live all BMW M5s!!!!!!! Edit: He ain’t lying about the “Power”,…don’t be that guy that attempts to drive the F10 M5,…any M5 for that matter, like it’s a 4-cylinder,…the S63 is an explosive runaway train,…going down hill! I have to disagree. The car is beautiful and powerful… but after owning an e60 x5m; twin turbo 8 cylinder engines from bmw are horrible. Valve stem seal leaks, vacuum leaks galore, cooling issues etc. I think bmw has really fine tuned their straight six engines especially since the f80 m3. The best engine from bmw though is from the e92 m3! But I’ll agree on everything else about the f10. It’s a great looker. Love the design and classic but modern looks.
Steering feel is awful and car feels numb. Yes you can tune up to the moon and get insane amounts of power, the steering feel and cold nature of the car will still be there. Did I mention it is also 4200-4400 lbs. it’s very heavy. Coming from near perfect e60 this car feels distant. Thankfully F90 has improved the steering feel issue somewhat
I’m curious to know, I noticed your tints are really dark, looks darker than 20% actually. I have 20% installed on my car but I’m debating on whether or not I should redo them with a darker tint. I do like that 20% is dark enough for some privacy but it’s still see through at certain angles and in direct sunlight you can see it in a bit. It helps that the interior if my car is black, so it’s not a big contrast (like a white interior). The problem though, if I were to go darker, is the question of visibility at night. I think 20% is okay, but how has your experience been driving at night with dark tint?
