I always find it easier as a DIY’r to put in a temp ledger board on the top (like you did) and install the top cabinets first since it hurts my back leaning over the lower cabinets. Also after the first time I put in cabinets I bought these really cool cabinet clamps from Amazon that apply normal clamping pressure but at the same time you can align the front of the cabinet face. Best $25 bucks I’ve spent. Great job!
they look good now but as i’ve seen some, the vinyl bubbles, they are termite smorgasboards, they chip.peel and crack, door hinges don’t hold up. I know you said this was just for a fast flip, glad i didn’t buy it! RTA cabinets are 3/4 inch plywood construction with maple doors and soft close, usually drawers are all dove tail and they are very close to what these cost, albeit, ytou have to assemble them which is actually pretty darn easy with basic tools.Rta cabinets will last decades where the lowes line might last a year if your lucky. Thanks for the article, great option if you want to cheap out on a flip
Thanks for the article. A tidbit on the soap thing It may help the screw or nail to go in easy but it’ll come out easy also guaranteed! soaps not the best thing to use next time just run the screw or nail through your hair or scalp sounds weird, but that’s just enough to lubricate the nail or the screw old-school tip. Good luck!
Lowe’s used to sell 21″ base and wall, 27″ base and wall, and 33″ base, sink base, wall (12″, 15″, and 30″ in height). They stopped producing these due to low sales because they would sit in a distribution for too long. Also replacing those sizes would cause customers issues which was unfortunate. I used to be a K&B designer for them and remembered when they stopped selling them.
I’m a single mom and installed upper and lower cabinets 3x in my life❤ not complicated I think you did a good job but I think you could have fixed some of the problems with kitchen functionality with a little more thought now someone has to come in and either have no dishwasher or fix it properly plus instead of getting a proper corner upper cabinet there is no cabinets on other wall near or around stove as a buyer that’s 2x’s against this kitchen not to mention the flow of where the refrigerator is makes 3 you would have been better off striping kitchen like you did cleaning it up like you did and saying to the new buyer hears $3000 dollars towards your new kitchen! Kitchens sell houses if they are done right you could have put the fridge on the wall where the stove was to go with tiny cabinet above put the stove and a range hood or microwave range hood where the sink was supposed to be put a small island across from the stove with sink and dishwasher and put pantry cabinet where the refrigerator was now you have good flow and functionality and a $20000 to $30000 increase for aprox max $5000 vs you may or may not get your $2k back and the house would sell a lot quicker❤❤❤❤❤
These cabinets are garbage. I have them in my kitchen, When they get a little bit of water on them, they start to bulge because it’s fiber board on the doors. They are cheaply made. You have to make sure that if water leaks on them from cooking and washing dishes that you quickly wipe it off. Or you will get the bulging on the shaker area of the cabinet. You did an incredible job on your installation
My Mom had her house renovated about 8 years ago, back then I hadn’t built anything with my own tools and it wasn’t often. And these cabinets were a bit more custom from Home Depot, she picked the style and veneer, color, etc. They’ve been ok but that’s it! She got a lot of compliments for them but quickly I realized she needed more custom storage solutions and some of the finishes weren’t pro looking at all and it cost more than off the shelf. The hardware has worked great but the material is crap, the veneer is crap and is showing signs of ware already and I really wish I had built them instead! Not everyone can do that or spend extra on custom anything so that’s totally fair but I’d still rather do the labor, invest time and money into higher quality materials such as real plywood and make the frame and doors out of solid hardwood. But if I were to do that I’d want to plan and execute something well thought out and timeless. I’d want something that looks great for the next century without fads ruining the look and with function as the highest priority over anything else. I don’t know I just feel strongly for myself and family I’d want to build something rather than throw money at ikea or Lowe’s, etc. most probably won’t agree and that’s fine. A rental property absolutely don’t waste money on expensive or long lasting as you can’t depend on a kitchen outlasting numerous tenants. If you’re in your first home and or can’t build for various reason totally understandable
I’m confused on your reasoning for ditching the dishwasher 🤷♂️ The house I bought didn’t have a spot for a dishwasher. My stove was next to my sink, so I moved my stove, extended my laminate countertop, and installed a dishwasher. It was pretty simple, and you can get hardware to attach a laminate countertop to another laminate countertop at Menards.
I too would NOT have eliminated the dishwasher. As a matter of fact properties that I own that don’t have a dishwasher I always will install one during a remodel. Women appreciate dishwashers more rhan men. I too have purchased countertop at Lowes and have also ordered countertop to size, which I just did yesterday. I find it to be a little more than double the cost, in otherwords $350 in store countertop turns out to be $750 special order. Looking at your project I highly doubt laminate countertop would be $1400.
Could you just use a really long screw in the existing hinge holes to bind the cabinets together? You’d have to take the hinge off the door and leave it on the cabinet. It’d be fewer visible screws, and less chance of splitting the wood. I kinda liked the brown ones lol Bit busy, but more character than the sterile white ones. I despise how homes are treated as commodities, for profit. At least I hope you didn’t/don’t end up selling it to corpo-rats. The spec home I just bought is full of ‘contractor grade’ or worse junk, including the cabinets. Huge gaps between them, no lazy susan or anything in the corners so a ton of wasted space; but they have gorgeous marble countertop slapped on top. It’s so weird what they think sells. I got it because it’s what I could afford without moving 1000+ miles away, and not 40+ years old.
As a custom cabinet maker, you can have custom cabinets made for less than what the design consultants will charge you for their high-end cabinets at Lowe’s Those Diamond cabinets are absolute junk!!!!!! It cost more to have them installed than what they cost, and they will start to break down immediately
Good production re the install BUT… a couple of disagreements: 1. Lowes design service is FREE and can be compared to several different cabinet lines cost when they finish; 2. Losing the dishwasher was a poor choice imo because you also will then lose 24″+ of counter space with dishes all piled up. 3. One cabinet should have been a 24″ drawer base. 4. Pushing the uppers up an extra 2″ (20″ height on the counter) also makes the uppers too high for easy reaching. Diamond Now are the lowest cabinet choice from Lowes, I believe. Hope they last. In my experience if you skimp on a rental you will be replacing items all the time. They just don;t last! Thanks.
A LAZY-SUSAN bottom corner cabinet is a waste of effort & space. The bottom corner cabinet is where all the big pots & pans should go, NOT a Lazy Susan. Now a Lazy Susan top cabinet in the corner “Works” because everything is at EYE-level & it’s something that you’re going to use a lot unlike the bottom corner cabinet where nobody’s gonna bend over constantly to go through & inventory what’s on the Lazy Susan as for selections.
One thing that is guaranteed is people in YouTube comments always get mad over the dumbest crap, lol. A dishwasher is a luxury item that the buyer can furnish on their own dime. In your situation the juice just wasn’t worth the squeeze, and if commentors don’t like it they can renovate their own kitchens, and put whatever they like in it. It looks like you left the uppers off the right 90 degree cabs. That’s really good in my opinion. The one thing I despise about my kitchen cabs is there is no above-cab room for a coffee maker, or small, countertop appliances. That means having to slide the coffee maker completely out from under the top cabs because they leave no room for pouring the water. In my instance we have to have the coffee maker on the breakfast bar because there’s just nowhere to put it on the countertops. My kitchen is a galley style, and I absolutely hate it. There’s no room for 2 people, which causes knife battles in the kitchen while my wife, and I are trying to make food, lol. It’s even more compounded because our fridge is one of those massive French door units. I think it’s 36 inches, and the space it’s in is literally 361/4 inches. The original purchaser, (it came with the house) didn’t measure the space before he bought it, had to cut part of the entryway trim off the wall, and move the light switch from the inside wall to the hallway.
