The average time a person spends looking at a piece in a museum is between 15 seconds and 30 seconds, which is enough time to understand the image’s intent, but not enough time to fully experience the work. James O. Pawelski, the director of education at the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center, compared the way people walk through a museum to the experience of strolling through library stacks. He argued that people can spend hours looking at hundreds of works and walk out without seeing anything.
Pawelski suggested that studying an artwork for an extended period instead of doing other tasks is an important part of understanding what lies within it. Art history students who are tasked with such close readings know how much a painting can hold within the frame. Phil Terry, who founded Slow Art Day, emphasized the power of looking at a work of art for more than seven seconds. I love this place. It is very compelling, and you do indeed feel that Soane will be back in just a few minutes. A most cherished moment was from the first time I visited in the early 1990s and I was actually the only visitor there. I was admiring the Hogarths and the gentleman docent said hang on a mo and got a hooked stick and started unfolding the walls which aren’t really walls but wall-sized panels that are hung with at least a couple of dozen Hogarths hidden within these “linen-fold” panels that were designed by Soane himself. You would never expect from just walking into the room that you were seeing only a fraction of Soane’s collection of Hogarths. Absolutely magical. Thank you kind docent; I hope you are well.
