High Gloss Shadowline Exterior Trim: What Is It?

The BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line trim is an optional option that adds a distinctive dark finish to the exterior mirrors, rear spoiler, and tailpipes of the new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé. This package includes a black kidney grille, headlight border, front vents, mirrors, and rear spoiler. Only a small number of vehicles use the high-gloss black shade known as Shadowline for their external trim, including M3s and 330s with the performance package (aka ZHP).

The “Exterior trim, High-gloss Shadowline” option is a free standard option and cannot be deselected, according to the BMW UK configurator. It is also available on M Sport variants. The Extended Shadowline Exterior Trim (code 7M9) is standard on G80/G82 cars in Canada/US (can be deleted at no charge) and can be deleted at no charge. The VIN decoding name is “Ind.high-gloss Sa.ch.l.w.ext.con”.

The Shadowline exterior trim is a blackened weather strip around the windows, usually in chrome, and the roof rails in black. The package includes the grill border, headlight border, front vents, mirrors, and rear spoiler. The “Exterior trim, High-gloss Shadowline” option is a no-cost standard option and cannot be deselected.

Shadowline trim in the USA has not been pitched as an option on the 3 Series before now, but it was regarded as the cheaper, less desirable standard trim. The “Shadowline” is the gloss black that replaces the faux chrome that runs down the side edge of the windscreen, along the door tops, and in the convertible.

The glossy black trim pieces are anodized, not painted, and discoloration does not mean that the surface has been damaged.

Is high gloss good for trim?

In order to achieve a shiny and glossy interior trim, it is recommended that a semi-gloss or high-gloss paint finish be considered. These paints are relatively simple to clean, but they may display more imperfections due to their high sheen and light reflectivity. For further information on the various paint finishes and sheens, please refer to the blog posts on the optimal paint sheen for interior walls and bathrooms.

What is included in the Shadowline package BMW?

The “Shadowline Package” offers an extension of the M Sport Package, including the M Sport Package Pro. This latter option features red high-gloss calipers, M Shadowline lights, LED lights with Corning lights, and extended Shadowline trim options.

What is the Shadowline?

A shadow line is a thickened line in a linear drawing of an object, such as a sundial, that indicates the edges farthest from the source of light. The shadow line is employed to indicate the direction of light rays, thereby facilitating a more accurate visualization of the object’s shape and appearance. The term “shadow line” is derived from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

What is the purpose of Shadowline?

A shadow line is a unique interior design feature that creates a “shadow” around the ceiling using a P50 shadowline metal angle. This creates a sleek, elegant effect, adding personality and character to a living environment. Many homeowners appreciate the clean, sleek, and contemporary look of a shadow line ceiling or bulkhead, making it a great way to improve the style of their home or office. This unique and stylish addition can have a significant impact on the overall aesthetic appeal.

Is high-gloss or semi gloss better for exterior trim?

Shiny semi-gloss paint is ideal for exterior trim, architectural details, and doors due to its durability and luminous finish. It ranges from 40 to 85 reflectiveness and is easy to clean, making it suitable for high-traffic doors and shutters. However, it’s not suitable for covering entire siding as it shows bumps and blemishes, and applying it can be difficult. Additionally, it can cause too strong glare in direct sunlight. Oil-based paints, which are more common than latex or acrylic-based paints, emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can harm people, pets, and the environment, making it a less suitable choice.

Is the Shadowline package worth it?

The Shadowline Package is a premium package for BMW vehicles, focusing on exterior upgrades. It is worth the extra cost for those who value appearance. However, those who prefer more interior features may opt for the Premium or Convenience packages. The Premium Package includes features like parking assist, a surround-view camera, and a head-up display. The cost of these premium features depends on the model, with prices ranging from $1, 900 to $3, 350.

The BMW 3 Series’ standard Shadowline exterior trim offers a sportier appearance with black high-gloss accents, including the side window frame edging, B-pillar trims, exterior mirror frames, and mirror triangle. Additionally, new exterior colors and wheel designs are also available.

  • “Christmas project” 2006 BMW 330i update: Followed the step-by-step very carefully, including using the recommended paint, tape, plastic covering, etc. BE SURE you tape VERY carefully, especially on bright trim where it borders body-color painted surfaces. The overall results were OUTSTANDING! I only had to re-visit a couple of small places, and I, too, had some unintended overspray, easily corrected with solvent. I had never before painted on a car, so if a geezer newbie like me can achieve excellent results, you can too! I can’t thank Midnight Paint & Body enough. A Merry Christmas indeed.

  • Thank you for uploading this. I was quoted around $200 to do this to my SUV but now I am getting closer to being confident enough to do it myself. Id like to change my front bumper trim (chrome) to a matte black. Do i just sand it the same as you did here? When I googled it some sites said to put chemicals on it to strip the chrome first. Is that really necessary?

  • I am divided here. I am one who always loved black cars and black details on them, simple and black with an accent like red calipers. Sadly, it has become such a ghetto thing now a days that I am not sure I want it anymore. I mean, everyone is doing it.. I know it is nothing new.. but it has become extremely common now among douches lol I have a white car with black wheels, painted the calipers in red. I did a pretty good job I have to say xD and it looks really neat. Next I was considering to black out the trims just like this… white car with black trims looks very neat… but I am just 50% 50% about it lately.

  • Question; I work for a company that makes interior trim items for aircraft; the customer engineers who design the parts (Aluminum) want them painted. According to the prints and directions the parts have to be scuffed/brushed first, then go to get plated and then go to a painter. The paint keeps nicking off. I have tried to tell them the plating is to smooth for the paint to adhere well. Am I on the right track?

  • looks nice! Ive got an audi a4 allroad with chrome grill that i want to paint gloss black. I think its aluminium coat with plastic under and not “real” chrome. What is the best way to paint it? Sand it a little bit then sand with water til the chrome gets a bit matte? Should i add 2K clearcoat so that it can take chemicals when i wash it? Thanks in advance.

  • Great job looks really good And also good choice by your daughter. I have chrome bumpers would you recommend using the same paint for the chrome bumpers? I know you should send them with 80 grit and edge primer on it. Do you think it would last? My neighbor down the street wants to buy the chrome bumpers and I thought I would just buy bumpers that I can paint. What do you think for your comments?
