In a kitchen renovation, there are several essential features to consider. These include a breakfast bar or island, ample cabinet space, cabinets in your favorite color, quartz countertops, and smudge-proof stainless steel appliances. Choosing the right palette is crucial for a cohesive look.
When remodeling your home, it’s important to ensure the heart of the kitchen looks as good as possible. This includes finding the right combination of lighting and having plenty of storage. Drawers are the best option for organizing items, and there are many dividers, organizers, food containers, and racks available to store almost anything.
Another must-have is a roll-out pantry drawer, quartz apron front sink, pot filler, pull-out trash and recycle bin, coffee bar, clever storage, elevating hardware, incorporating a seatingnook, turning up lighting, considering all cabinetry types, and a pull-out table.
A pet-friendly kitchen cabinet with wine refrigerator, steam oven, built-in refrigerator, double ovens, and high-style features is also essential. A deep undermount sink, smart appliances, pull-out waste container cabinet, gooseneck faucet, garbage disposal, and hidden microwave are also essential.
In summary, a kitchen renovation should focus on creating a functional and visually appealing space that accommodates all family members. By incorporating various cabinetry types, such as drawers, pantry drawers, quartz apron front sinks, pot fillers, trash and recycling bins, coffee bars, and sinks, you can create a comfortable and functional space that is easy to maintain and clean.

How do you avoid the 5 worst kitchen design mistakes?
To create a functional and attractive kitchen, avoid common design mistakes such as not respecting the Kitchen Work Triangle, which consists of the sink, stove, and refrigerator. Design the kitchen with these fixtures in a triangular arrangement, making it easy to move between them and speed up meal preparation. This will save time and make meal preparation more efficient.
Poor lighting is another crucial consideration during the design process. It’s essential to consider the available natural light during the day and the amount of light available as the seasons change and daylight hours fluctuate. Poor lighting can come in many forms, such as not enough or overbearing lighting. Choose lighting that complements the color palette of your walls, cabinets, and countertops to ensure good visibility at all hours without harsh glare.
In summary, creating a functional and attractive kitchen requires careful consideration of the Kitchen Work Triangle, lighting, traffic flow, missing backsplash, and visible trashcans. By avoiding these common design mistakes, you can create a kitchen that is both functional and attractive.

What is the golden rule for kitchen design?
The work triangle in a kitchen design connects the cooktop, sink, and refrigerator, ensuring efficient movement between tasks like cooking, cleaning, and food preparation. The distance between these zones should range from 4 to 9 feet. The kitchen layout should also include provisions for power outlets and electrical appliances like the dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, stove, chimney, and RO water filter. Ensure that the doors of the refrigerator or dishwasher do not hinder movement within the kitchen.
What to include in a kitchen renovation?
The sink represents a pivotal element in any kitchen remodel, in conjunction with intelligent appliances, a pull-out waste container cabinet, a gooseneck faucet, a garbage disposal unit, a concealed microwave, floating shelves, and a cutlery divider.
What should I spend on kitchen renovation?
To maximize the return on your investment in a kitchen renovation, it is recommended to spend between 5 to 15 percent of your home’s value. For example, if your home is $300, 000, your budget should fall between $15, 000 and $45, 000. If you plan to hire a contractor and opt for high-end appliances, allocate your budget for the top of the range. If you plan to do the renovation yourself and use inexpensive materials, allocate your budget for the lower end.
Allocate your budget to each remodeling aspect and divide it among these categories. Factor in at least 17 labor costs when working with a contractor. The expenses of a kitchen remodel are listed in order of highest to lowest price, based on figures from the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

Kitchen cabinetry is the most expensive part of kitchen remodeling costs, accounting for 29% of the overall budget. A well-remodeled kitchen can significantly boost a home’s resale value, with an average return of 56 of the cost on a $80, 000 project in 2022. A smaller $28, 000 remodel netted an average return of 71. Smaller remodels often have greater ROI due to their focus on solving functional problems and versatile styles.
While plumbing and appliances are important, most potential buyers don’t need a highly ornamented kitchen. Kitchen remodels continue to grow in popularity due to their potential to boost a home’s resale value.

Great tips! I’m almost done updating my small kitchen and I managed to add that pull out trash cabinet, tall pantry next to the refrigerator (just one pantry cabinet that I sacrificed a small counter space) and that deep wall bridge cabinet above the refrigerator. I remodeled another kitchen a few years back and wanted something really different this time as it looked like your typical flipped kitchen. I kept the original 90’s back splash tile (in a neutral color) and went for a wood look countertop from IKEA.
Excellent tips! I have only used sink grids at other people’s homes. I liked it at first but then I noticed gunk (with germs and bacteria) builds up underneath and on the rubber covered pegs (or legs). It needs to be scrubbed with brush and it flings all over the sink and sometimes on counter. Also, it is hard to clean sink with grid in there. So, you drip water everywhere when you take it out to clean sink.(unless you take the time to dry it 🙂 ) They are nice, but just wanted people to realize they are no fun to clean.
Great tips!! ty!! For me the #1 item is DRAWERS *get as many drawer bases as possible*. Why use (what should be obsolete) door crawl in bases? Then people pay ridiculous amounts to add pull outs which require the doors to be opened to access the pull outs. Awkward. Those pullouts will never be as functional as simply installing the base as drawers. The drawer bases with the shallow 1st drawer (even if it is hidden inside a larger top drawer) are fantastic! May I suggest a article on drawer vs plain shelf base functionality? New builds that don’t have drawers instead of door bases need to be stopped:-). Are the old style door bases still chosen mostly by house flippers (installing for ROI) and/or homeowners who have never lived in a kitchen with drawer bases so they can’t grasp what a game changer drawers really are for accessability and space optimization? Glad I found your website. Thanks so much!! 0:02
Modern kitchen here, and we LOVE having zero hardware. Flat cabinet surface makes it super easy to clean, with press open makes it easy to open and close. Also, you don’t bump into hardware or get stuck. (Some hardware can cause clothing to get stuck in them) Hardware is also just another thing to clean.

Basic advice to anyone remodelling a house, anyone with kids or elderly relatives will turn around and walk straight back out the door when they see the health and safety risk built in to this kitchen with a microwave above the cook top. The vent hood/microwave combo is not cost effective for the seller if it puts off half your potential buyers.
As an owner of a microwave vent hood, I have to say, that’s the one thing that does not function well in my kitchen. The venting is not adequate and having a microwave right at your eye/head level is awkward. When we do our reno, we are getting a proper standalone vent hood. Love your other tips though – thanks for the article!
A feature that I can see in the article that you didn’t mention is “to the ceiling” cabinets! Storage is in such demand in every kitchen that it doesn’t make sense to waste that space above the cabinets. (Understandable if there’s plumbing etc. up there). It’s a great place for those things that don’t get used often. Where I’m in disagreement is… your spices & oils should NEVER be stored near or above a heat source. The heat from your stove or oven will degrade your spices & cause your oils to go rancid faster. Heat, air & light are not good for spices.. or most pantry food items. ALSO… having a wall oven doesn’t take up more cabinetry than a range combo. You just store your pots, pans etc in the cabinetry under the range. And accessing the cabinets up high is no more difficult w a wall oven than without. Lol. But you were right.. you would lose a bit of counter space. But if you’re a baker, etc, a wall oven could also include a confection(?) oven & a proofing drawer & broiler. I was kinda wondering why only a 4 burner stove top in such a huge kitchen? Seems like a lot of people want 6 burners these days.. or 4, 5+ a grill. But I also agree w the pantry! YES! Gotta have a pantry, even a small one is better than cramming everything 3 ft deep in a cupboard. 😊
