This guide provides tips and examples for preparing for an undergraduate degree in interior design at the University of Plymouth. It aims to equip students with the necessary tools to compile a portfolio that showcases their evolving skills and sets a path towards a successful career. Applicants must submit the complete portfolio, including a video essay, through the Portfolio component of their online application.
An interior design portfolio is a visual compilation of past work that communicates a unique point of view. It may be represented across a portfolio website, social media page, and a web page. Portfolio requirements vary depending on the program you are applying to, such as Basic Interior Design (BID) certificate programs, Associate in Applied Science (AAS), or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA).
A portfolio needs to show evidence of creativity, which is critical to architecture. A strong portfolio full of sketches for things isn’t required, but it should be professional. Top colleges offering a bachelor of interior design course often require a portfolio as part of the admissions process.
In conclusion, a portfolio is essential for showcasing an individual’s design skills and expertise. It should consist of two parts: written essays and design projects. The goal is to understand the creative process in both written and visual forms.

Thank you so much for this! After covid I went to college right out of highschool and dropped out bc of mental health issues. Now, applying back, felt so overwhelming. I decided I wanted to do interior design but when they asked for me to design a space I was so scared and overwhelmed. This really helped!
This was so helpful! I’m applying to university (from the UK) for the next academic year and I’m starting to get my portfolio together. I currently work full time at B&Q (which is the UK’s version of Home Depot) as a Kitchen Designer. I’m planning on using some of my designs from work in my portfolio so which category would this fall under? I can include HD renders and also floor plans with measurements etc. Thank you!

Hello Sandra, thank you very much for your article, this year I applied for Interior Decorating and I would like to know if my portfolio could be done digitally. I took some courses at the Sena in Colombia and I have several jobs that could be placed in the portfolio. My My concern is if I can design a digital catalog where I can also show articles. Thank you very much
I’m here because I’m undecided if I’ll do interior design because I don’t know what to do in my portfolio, and I’m quite perfectionist abt drawing floor plans, but I saw that it’s ok, that the line is not straight. And thank you a lot, because I got a lot of ideas abt my portfolio.😊 – your soon to be interior designer
