In 2024, home renovation projects are expected to return to warm, organic interiors, with DIY becoming a popular shorthand for crafts and home improvement projects. Experts predict that 62 of American homeowners will undertake a home renovation or remodeling, up from 48 in 2023. The demand for renovations is outstripping the supply of materials and labor. HGTV experts provide tips on how to refresh your home with easy and cost-effective DIY projects for every room, such as painting, updating floors, changing window treatments, and replacing light fixtures.
Millennials are leading the DIY sector of the home improvement industry in 2022, with 73% of them being DIYers. The top DIY trends for home renovations in 2024 include a return to wood cabinets, old money upgrades, faux built-ins, colorful tile work, sustainable and eco-friendly design, smart home integrations, multi-purpose living spaces, outdoor living rooms, and small spaces.
However, the proportion of DIY projects declined from 62.7 in 2022 to 61.4 in 2023, while the share of “do it for me” experienced a corresponding decrease. These trends are expected to stay in 2024, including zoning with color and materials, incorporating wooden accents in kitchens, and reinventing outdoor spaces, multi-use areas, and niche features in kitchens. Inflation, rising remodeling costs, and stagnated incomes are influencing homeowner readiness within the home improvement industry in 2024.
