What can I use to hang decorations outside?
Hanging outdoor decorations on your home’s exterior can be a festive experience, but it can also cause potential damage to your roof, siding, and windows. For vinyl-sided houses, hanging decorations can be tricky due to the risk of water seeping behind it. Improper methods of hanging decorations can also cause damage to shingles, gutters, fascia, capping, and other parts of your home.
To protect your home’s exterior from holiday decor damage, follow these tips:
Use plastic light clips to line your roof and gutters with lights. These clips not only save your roof but also allow for more creative control over the display. They work with popular icicle lights and are easily removable, preventing damage to gutters, fascia, capping, or shingles.
Try vinyl siding hooks to hang decorations without drilling or nailing through them. These hooks can be used on vinyl siding and windows, and can be removed without tugging on stapled wires.
Explore in-window adhesive decorations and wrap columns and railings to add a festive touch to your home. By following these tips, you can ensure your home’s exterior is protected from damage during the holiday season.
What is the best material for outdoor Christmas decorations?
When selecting outdoor decorations, opt for materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions, such as metal, plastic, or weather-resistant fabrics. These decorations will last for multiple festive seasons and prevent the need for annual replacements. For porous decorations, apply a waterproof sealant to create a barrier against rain and snow, preventing circuit failure and damage. Invest in weatherproof, outdoor-rated LED lights for outdoor Christmas lights, which are sturdier, more durable, and energy-efficient.
These lights are safe for outdoor use and can last for multiple seasons, ensuring a festive display without worrying about weather-related damage. Overall, investing in durable outdoor decorations can save you time and money on annual replacements.
What can I decorate my patio with for Christmas?
Outdoor Christmas décor can be enhanced by using outdoor Christmas lights to frame doors, windows, and ceilings, and to decorate nearby trees. Pre-lit Christmas trees, greenery, or potted plants can also create a welcoming atmosphere. Lanterns and LED candles are versatile and safe outdoor lights that can be used for pathway lights, doorways, or table décor. To avoid safety risks, ensure wires are covered and choose battery-operated foliage for convenience. Balsam Hill’s popular outdoor Christmas décor includes tree lights, greenery, and potted plants.
How do you make an outdoor Christmas scene?
Create a classy Christmas look by using white string lights around trees and garden structures, adding snow at the base of trees and bushes for a magical effect. Cover outdoor seating with winter-white faux fur blankets before guests arrive or plan to move outside. A simple garden heater, fire pit, and outdoor heater will keep you and guests cozy and add a decorative element to your garden, ensuring your occasions can remain outdoors, even in cold weather.
How do you stabilize outdoor Christmas decorations?
To ensure the safety of your holiday decorations, use a thin coat of sealant like polyurethane or acrylic to protect them from moisture damage and sun exposure. Secure your decorations to the ground with stakes or pegs to prevent them from falling over or blowing away in the wind. Use zip ties to tie down light strands or loose parts of your decorations. Wrap cord connectors with electrical tape or plastic baggie to prevent moisture and fire risks.
Only use decorations and cords designed for outdoor use and avoid indoor decorations. Use a ground-fault circuit interpreter (GFCI) to prevent shocks and shortages in your power system. Move your decorations inside if the weather forecast indicates harsh conditions like hail or high-speed winds. Mow your lawn before putting up your decorations to maintain a flat and evenly trimmed lawn. Be mindful of how your holiday decorations are placed in relation to your underground irrigation system and use an irrigation map to locate the layout of your yard’s sprinkler system.

How do you make outdoor Christmas balls with lights?
DIY Christmas light balls have become a popular DIY phenomenon since Christmas Lights, Etc first introduced the idea. The process involves cutting chicken wire with a 2:1 LxW ratio, creating a cylinder, forming a ball shape, and wrapping it with LED Christmas lights. The lights are then connected to the ball and enjoyed. How to create a winter wonderland outside?
To create a winter wonderland, hang icicle-shaped or string lights around the porch, add white string lights to a potted pine tree, or use lanterns with a white candle inside as centerpieces for your outdoor table. If you don’t have an outdoor fireplace, use an artificial flame heater for warmth on colder nights. With the help of a projector, you can create the illusion of snowfall or host a light show on the exterior of your home.

Beautiful diys!! I can’t decide on a favorite project because they are all so pretty!! I love them all😊. I usually decorate with the traditional red and green Christmas colors, but I am going to change it up this year using Winter Wonderland Theme. The colors I will be using are Silver, different Blues, and White. I think that it will be really pretty. Like you, I live in Texas and hardly ever get cold winters😞! Thank you for all of your inspiration.
I Love all of these! Especially, the hoola hoop, solar light, updide down tree, swag, door present wrap. I have a mostly Red & Silver theme this year. I got a ton of Christmas balls/baubles at a garage sale this year, would love to see DIYs to use them up. You are so much Fun!!! Thx again!!! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Girl you are back with a vengeance!!! These are absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to go to DT tomorrow to pick up the supplies to try & recreate each one of these. You really have blown me away with how simple yet elegant each one of these beautiful creations turned out. So happy to see your articles again. Hugs from Oregon 😊.
Girl I am so happy to see you here!! Love love love everything!! I never do the same tree twice!! I know it sounds crazy but I diy things and repurpose and reuse. lol. This year is emerald green and gold!! Hope it turns out like the vision. I am doing a couple of the hula hoop ornaments for my windows on the front of my house. Thank you so much for sharing. Love ya lady!!
I think it would be aweosme to give some of the diy to those in nursing homes! That would brighten their days!!!!! You did a great job! My mom and I do a lot of diy and we love it! My mom took some of the pumkin place mats that are material from dollar tree and made her a valance for her kitchen and placemats on the table to match! She did a wonderful job! It’s Jesus’s birthday and I love decorating for His birthday
I don’t change up my theme from year to year. I do red, green, silver, crystal. I do edit my decor from year to year, donating some old whenever I find something new. But I find the familiar comforting at that time of year. Loved all of these DIYs. I own that glitter infested reindeer and now I know what to do with it!
Megan I love your fantastic ideas! I always decorate with traditional Christmas red, green and gold. (However I do have a whimsical tree with crazy colors—created for the grandkids!). So glad you are back -—no kidding I love your delivery, energy and enthusiasm for decorating with Dollar Tree items — and assuring, “that they don’t look cheap!” Keep up the great crafting!!! 🎄👍❤️
Love the new article. As usual, fantastic ideas. I love the traditional colors of reds and greens as well. I also have a thing for snowflakes and I’m always looking for new ways to showcase my collection. I love mixing rustic and nature with vintage, traditional and a splash of sparkle. Part of the fun is using my Christmas collection reimangined each year. I’m so happy to see your articles again. You are one of my favorite creators on YouTube. 😊
Our Christmas is going to be, “It’s a Girl’s Christmas!” at my house. I bought a pink tree at the end of last year. Everything will be white, silver, & pink. I’ve been waiting for ankle surgery so I might not be decorating at all this year if I get booked for surgery. Everything you’re making is beautiful & Easy Peasy. I think that maybe I can make everything that you created. Love listening to you. Thank you!
Thank you Megan as always ! Fun, smart, easy and most importantly classy ! The solar lamp/broomstick and the Christmas stockings are my favorite ( Iam going to make that ) If you get a chance, would love to see something on ‘glam theme’ Christmas tree( not sure if I can pull that one) but hey ! If you style it, the tree will turn out classy for sure 🎉
Candyland. I have already to go this year. Popsickle out of DT plastic bowls, peppermint suckers out of DT broom handles, pool noodles, candy yard lights out of DT colored plastic bowls, candies out of pool noodles, wrapping paper. Gum balls yard lights out of plastic Christmas balls. I’m trying to think of more stuff to make for yard displays. I have wrapped gift boxes, trees, made of lights, and melting snowmen. I’m going to make some Armatures of horses pulling a sleigh, more reindeer next year. Would love to hear some ideas that would help in my yard as this will be my next years also.
Hey girl, so glad to see another new download from you! I love all of these, the reindeer one has always been a favorite of mine. I recall a article when you made a couple of them and putting them beside your fireplace, I think, right? 🤔 Anyhow, much love to you and your family! God bless! I’m looking forward to your next post!!! xx
I loved your article! I am a big fan of Christmas DIY as well but what made me laugh was when you mentioned about your neighbors with decorating early for Christmas because as a fellow YouTuber I am the same way lol. I don’t want my neighbors to know the inside of my house is already decorated in October!! Also located in Texas friend!
My Christmas theme this year, as it is every year, is traditional: red and green. None of this dull, boring neutral stuff (black, white and beige, farmhouse and rustic) that seems to be all over YouTube ad nauseam. I want those pops of Christmas color. It’s Christmas for crying out loud! Let’s live a little!
😡 with YouTube ~ why was this website recommended “AFTER CHRISTMAS” ~ I wish I’d been notified of this before Christmas ~ would have been very useful! 😂 okay I’ve had my little blow up ~ You have amazing ideas and I am going to try these next Christmas ~ new subscriber also!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!🎉
Love the stocking. I’ve used them before stuffed for decoration but never thought of the floral picks, brilliant. This year Im making 2 swags for my arbor with a lite garland in between. And in the planters by the street, I stick in branches that I’ve painted white, adding snowy glitter, red berries and greenery at base with a bow.
All of these are awesome! I never thought about making a “hallmark lantern”…I love it! I still like the buffalo check and natural wood decor. I have a few Nativity sets that are wooden and I love them. I’m on a very tight budget this year, so no go buying new decor, I’ll just reuse and redo what I have. Thanks for the inspirations!
I love traditional too. But I have started doing every room in my down stairs different. Gingerbread/ candy, dinning room Vintage. Eating area in kitchen traditional with kitchen added cocoa bar stuff and family room woodland but this year I’m changing that up to add gold candlesticks and deer and accents. I really think almost every style is beautiful. Now I have grandkids I do it for them. They love going from room to room looking at every thing. I use to always have the same style threw the whole house but now I see the light threw there eyes and they light up.
Oh my gosh….these were so good!! Last year I made giant ornaments from the clear party bowls from dollartree. Not just bulbs….‘I didn’t stop there’ 😂 I added a smaller bowl on the bottom then the plastic champagne cup without the base. These were so beautiful ppl from the street would ask where I bought them! And surprisingly the hot glue held up all winter!! I’m putting them out again this year!! I’m also going to do your lamp post and reindeer!! Love them!!
Goodness, I’m exhausted! I’m so glad we can save articles cause I was scrambling at first, looking for paper and pen to write down supplies. I will be making every single idea you’ve shown us, with my own twist on them. You are amazing! I Love that your articles are not long and drawn out. I feel like you woke me up 😂. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Bless you and Happy Holidays!! 💝🎄🎄🎁🎁💝
@ Glue Guns and Roses (Cool YouTube tag).I will use about seven slender trees up to nine feet and fill them in with my grandson’s nutcrackers from a large collection. The backside of the house is all windows overlooking an Olympic size pool, roses that bloom year around, and lots of colorful lantana. I want to try making your outdoor designs for a 3D effect all around the yard and fire pit. I will need more designs so if you have more ideas you can share please do.
Last year the family did purple, black, and silver for Christmas (for my nephew’s senior year), and we’ll do that again next year, and in 2026, and in 2029. (Dear God, I hope they never move/change schools — it’s so difficult to find purple Christmas decor… 😅😅) SO, this year we’re doing traditional red and green (with pops of gold & silver). 🥰
Love this article easy, simple, quick, and cost effective 😊 Using that same sort of idea as the tablecloth; have you thought about making those door hanging down banners and just adding the words of choice for Christmas? Like maybe one with MERRY and one with BRIGHT. To hang on each side of the door. Let me know if you make a article. Thanks so much for sharing. Looks outstanding. We love Christmas. God bless.
Best, easy and inexpensive. Thanks! I’m downsizing, using what I have by order of my son. Red, gold and green this yr. Unrolled foil ribbon from Goodwill, maybe 30 yrs. old. It is holding on the top of a chain link fence. Twisted small red ribbons to the lower part of the fence and looped green beads below the foil ribbon. Made a crisscross tree using a trellis and lighted garland $1. Goodwill, never used. Topped with red and gold bows. Priced these items at shocking 2023 prices. Did not spend a dime this inflationary year. Use what you’ve got is our family challenge.
Hi Megan. I’ve just discovered you and I’m hooked. I not only love your ingenious crafts, but also your personality and your sense of humor is just delicious. I found myself grinning, smiling and nodding and saying “oh, yeah!” and in total agreement with some of the things you said. Kindred? I’m afraid I’m gushing (don’t mean to) but love your presence. (People are going to think I’m a crazy old woman, now. lol) God bless.
Wow these are some great ideas! I’m thinking of focusing on snow, peppermint, evergreens and deer because we’re welcoming a family from the Philippines this year and the kids will be having their first US Christmas and usually I would only be decorating for Yule and Hanukkah. I’ll probably use ALL of these ideas. Plus Santa. I just don’t feel comfortable with full on religious decorations. So I wonder if you have a light hearted nod to a tabletop manger scene or permission to skip it!!?
@GlueGunsRoses I just wanted to tell you that I missed you and I’m sure SO many others have missed your diy articles and your adorable giggle. Your so creative and your projects are not hard to do. I will be 60 in Dec and am in bad health, brain disease, ect. so I try and craft as much as possible to keep my mind busy. Your articles are SOOOOO good and affordable. Thank you!
Love your podcast name! I prefer jewel tones for the holidays. I really don’t have a theme, unless you call ‘This is our life’ a theme. Our family has been collecting ornaments since we first got married – 40 years ago. We’ve made them, received them as gifts and swaps, bought them for special occasions. But generally it’s deep red, pine green, and ivory. And either woodland Christmas or Nutcracker, which actually works well together. I love the little $1.25 trees. Every year, I knit a mini sock during Advent season. And after they are made, I put them on my mini tree. The grandsons love coming to my house to see what new socks are on the tree. Oh, and there is a knitted star on top.
Ur article just came up on my Google feed and I’m so glad it did! I love the reindeer on the outdoor shepherds hook/ stakes. We just moved into this house 2yrs ago and it was built in 1949. So I’m all about the vintage looks to go with the style of the house. Outdoor vintage is not easy to find lol. We need another “junk” store here lol. Any ideas you have would be great! Thanks 😊
holy moly I LOVE the broomstick light. when my wee ones were still wee, we would “wrap” the kitchen cabinet doors, well looking at the “tablecloth” ribbon on the door, I will have to try that on mine 😀 as for my decorating style, it is black & white buffalo check and gnomes 😉 truthfully, my gnomes are up year round. I do like the looks of the metal framed gift boxes and want to put some along my stairs outside – any ideas? I so enjoy your articles, thank you and can’t wait to see what you come up with next
Megan, You have the best DYI I have seen so far for Christmas and I said that last week too when I watched your candle making with cookie cutters. I had you in mind all week. I went to Michaels and other stores and no one had bags of wicks. I do have a question but, I never see replies from YouTube crafters so I may have to Google my candle question. My boyfriend who is very smart with cell phones and computers cannot figure out either how to see comments that crafters may write back to me. I still always comment when I watch Shannon and Jamie Miles and you and others. I haven’t been feeling well today and tonight so thank God for YouTube crafters. I have been in bed the entire day and I’m suppose to be finishing up on crafts for my 2 day sake next weekend. I still have gluing to do and sewing and candy cane earrings to finish and all the price tags. By 5pm tomorrow night is the deadline to drop off all the crafts. This year we are not allowed to set up ourself. The host is setting up each table. I hope I’m near the door so I am noticed before people get tired and may never get to the back or downstairs. One year I was downstairs and many of my crafts became gifts. By the way, I have never seen the tall trees in any of the Dollar Tree near my job. There are 3 in a 5 mile radius and none where I live. Your tree is beautiful! It’s as nice as a Harriet and David and the other tree companies name escapes me. If I ever have a house I would love one on each side of the door. I also LOOOOOVE your lantern and my go to color for Christmas is red.
