Can AI design a house?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing industries and the way we live and work, particularly in architecture. AI is enabling architects to create visually stunning and functional homes, pushing boundaries of creativity and innovation. Architects like Jono Fleming, co-host of The House Project at Bunnings and the House of Style podcast, have embraced AI as a tool to explore new design possibilities.

Fleming used an AI program called Midjourney to create a “dream home scenario” in the Tasmanian wilderness, resulting in overwhelming awe and fear from the public. Despite the potential for AI to replace human creativity, architects are excited about the potential to elevate the design process and push the boundaries of home design.

How can I design my home by myself?

To get inspired for interior design, browse magazines, online resources, and visit model homes or real homes for sale. Create a Pinterest board or physical inspiration board to keep ideas in one place. Consider your lifestyle and budget when choosing colors, materials, and finishes. For example, choose durable, easy-to-clean materials for floors and finishings if you have young children. Your design style will determine some choices, such as using sleek, minimalist finishes and materials like stainless steel and glass for a contemporary home. Consider the overall flow of the house and how colors, materials, and finishes work together to create a cohesive design.

Design school is a crucial step towards professional practice in interior design, according to David Harper, associate dean at the New York School of Interior Design. Attending design school offers a holistic view of the industry and the craft, focusing on techniques, schematics, and compositions. It also forces students to study topics that a layperson may not consider, such as art history, color theory, and specific computer programs. Maria Lomanto, president of ASID New York Metro and founding principal of DesignGLXY, urges that attending school is essential for those pursuing interior design and not just decorating.

She believes that learning about building standards, codes, health safety, welfare, and lighting through experience would be slow and arduous, and any experience gained prior to classwork would not count towards qualifying for the exam.

  • Ramon, of course Christmas is my FAVORITE holiday to decorate for, followed by Fall & Easter. I also love the patriotic because after my spring decor I put up my red, white & blue. I leave it up for Memorial Day, 4th of July & Labor Day! Then I go into Halloween & Fall. Whew! It’s ALOT, but I LOVE IT!!!

  • Christmas is my favorite too ! But a very close 2nd is fall. I tend to have very bright holidays when I decorate, those are usually always lit up with lights and colors ! Christmas is always different and of course, fall is all the oranges ! Red, white, and blue refreshes my spirit ! And lately, because of you, I might add, the season has started to sparkle too ! When you decorate, things are simply beautiful !

  • Happy Wednesday Ramon I love to decorate for every holiday and every season but my favorite two are Halloween and Christmas I go all out I live in a private family house two floors so I decorate the front of the house and inside and the stairways and mostly all of my ideas I get from your wonderful articles thank you for being a blessing to me and others

  • Your articles are always fun to watch, but they are also educational and especially a source of inspiration! I love the fact, that you do not shy away from showing us when you change your mind on something. It happens often enough with projects at home – the colour for the closet was not the right shade of green, one had imagined – and I find it a big and important step in a design process – and of course in learning as well. In showing us that even you with your talent for design have that moments, it helps a lot to get the courage to start any project and most importantly, to continuing and change instead of giving up in the middle. Thank you for all the heart you put in your articles and I´m very exited to see with what you will come up this year!

  • Hey Drew, As a first timer, I just loved your article. Can’t believe you gave away a whole house makeover!! What a blessing for that family. I’ll be 69 this year and love doing my own DIY’s. • Drew, I love to see how much you have challenged yourself and learned how to use so many different techniques and power tools through the years. You continue to put out great content and keep yourself surrounded by great people. It’s been so nice to see Marie as such a loyal friend and roommate, your friendship with McKenna grow and Justin and you work so well together. ❤

  • When I was a young woman (I m 70 now) I used to free Lance interior decorate. ( do what u can as a single mom) But somewhere I lost the eye. However, following you these past years have fired up my creative juices. Love your eye * brain. I have found myself perusing you for projects. Your fabulous instructions are indeed an inspiration. • I love perusal your articles. You are always so calm working on all your project, even when things become a little challenging (like the recent tiles not sticking). But I love that you show us the difficult parts of your remodel. It motivates me to start my own projects knowing things always work out if you keep working at it.

  • Love your website and did the idea for large scale artwork! We have 18’ walls and haven’t found art that we love, so we did the same thing as a set of 3 large canvases. Next project is to reupholster our dining room chairs once we find a fabric we love. Looking forward to the new year and seeing all your renovations in your new home!

  • I was already too excited to watch this idea seeing it was a full hour in length! Then noticed the giveaway – what a surprise, what an amazing giveaway!! So grateful to have found your website last year!

Hope i can get it all done ! Looking forward to a great year and I wish you the same .

  • New to Instagram, but did just find you and following. I found your website during the “lockdown” along with your friend XO MaCenna. Currently looking for a big outdoor branch to start gluing cherry blossoms. Thank you for that idea as I do not have a green thumb. My favorite article by far was you showing your landlord all the work you did to the apartment. His reaction was priceless and made me cry. Congrats on your new home. I am enjoying you tackle each room at a time.

  • I love looking around my current apartment with my boyfriend and seeing all the diys (a lot of diy canvas art) but what I’m even more excited for this year is we will be moving into our first house! Although it’s just a rental, I’m still excited to have more space to get into making over furniture and working with wood!

  • Drew – you just continue to amaze me! Your creativity, amazing and affordable design ideas, user-friendly DIY projects, all while maintaining a sunny disposition and upbeat attitude. I adore all of your articles. I cannot wait to see your upcoming projects for 2023 & your new home design journey. Happy New Year!

  • 6:00 love that abstract artwork! I needed some pattern and texture on the wall above my bed, so I did something similar. I got some cheap framed canvases from bed bath and beyond that were on clearance. I painted over the existing art with some white paint to make sure that it didn’t show through when I was done. I got some really gorgeous grasscloth patterned peel and stick wallpaper and just covered each piece with the wallpaper. I have nine 6×6 squares that are hung in a square formation and they look SO expensive and chic.

  • I am new to your website and love your DIY content. The projects are so accessible, both the bigs and the smalls. I am getting my 80s home ready to sell, so the staging tips and project ideas are on point. Will be following your new house renovation enthusiastically as I process through what my next home (whenever I find it) will be like.

  • I have been so inspired by people like you, Macenna, and other YouTubers to DIY my house into a home! I have a whole list of plans on Notion for everything that I want to do this year. I’m so excited! Also Happy New Year and congrats on your new home! I’ve been perusal your articles of your renovations and I absolutely love what you’ve done with the kitchen. The cupboards remind me of chocolate and I am here for it!

  • Kind Sir, your talent is “Exceptional and Inviting”. I’m moving soon, and am truly looking forward to completing a number of these projects. I’m blessed to have the funds to purchase whatever furnishings I’d like, but these projects allow you to expend effort and creativity, and that’s a wonderful ‘recipe for the best outcome’! My daughters are also handily skilled, and there’s some we’re already discussing getting together to create beautiful items for our homes, and even better memories for our hearts. Wish Us Luck!!

  • Hi Drew, I always enjoy everything on your articles. Thank You for all you do. I am a new subscriber but will be perusal daily. GREAT personality and GREAT ideas keep us always coming back!! Have a great yr even though I am late tuning in. (Sept. 2023) I will be perusal your new home updates too. Your family is so nice too.

  • Just adding another small tip for you about reupholstering the chair bottom on the Jenny Lind chair seat. I have worked in the Design World a long time. So, my advice would be to have pulled out the staples on the black finishing cloth on the bottom of the chair, and then after you have stapled your fabric on the chair bottom, you can re-Staple it back on for a tidy look. Or if a chair didn’t come with that black finishing cloth. Go to the landscaping area in your nearest Home Depot, etc . store and buy the black sheeting type stuff you lay down in your flower beds that stops the weeds from growing in your garden. This is the very same stuff and the finish will look nice and tidy under the bottom of your chair. Love your Stuff. And follow your site. Very upbeat guy and you inspire people with your great personality. And besides my son’s name is also Drew, and I can’t help but love you. Keep up the good work.

  • Hi Drew! I’ve been subscribed for such a long time and have loved the way you’ve developed and evolved your website this past year. I would absolutely die if I won the Samsung Framed TV. It’s been my dream and my partner and I just moved into our new home and we would absolutely love it! Love you, Drew ❤♥️♥️

  • Drew I have ten 12″×12″ etched square mirrors I plan on putting them on both sides of my bed 5 of each. I have a window behind my headboard so thought it would look amazing. Oh I just thought maybe instead of just doing a straight row I could stagger every second one. I think that would be cool amazing. I was also thinking about painting that wall a deep raspberry. I have 10 foot ceilings so it is a pretty big wall . The other 3 walls I was thinking about a warm beige . What do you think about those colors and do you think the mirrors are a tacky idea???

  • It’s honestly been so fun and inspiring seeing the evolution of many of my long time favorite YouTubers go from smaller crafty DIYs to major home renovations and design. It definitely makes me excited for home ownership one day. But this article did remind me that I can always start small where I am. 🙂 My 2023 resolution is to tap back into my creativity with new projects and get out of my comfort zone. Including woodworking and finally get over my fear of power tools lol. It’s time!

  • I am currently finding my personal style for my home and renovating my entire rental duplex. My landlord is letting me renovate the entire space which is a really exciting opportunity as I start my flipping home journey. I love that your articles make is possible to fit your DIYs into our own styles and leave us room to also get creative. Thanks for not painting us in a box but giving us the tools to be creative!

  • Hello dear Fox,my daughter Melanie introduced me to your articles, and now I am obsessed with you, your articles, products and creations. I recently moved to Florida, after the tragic accident on my son, and to be close to my grandkids, I am renting an apartment, but I am in the process of moving to a different one into weeks, it’s totally bare and empty, and I would love to have ideas of how to decorate it to make it pleasant and Confortable for me and safe, since I am a disabled woman . I know you are super busy and you probably won’t get to read this message, but at least I was worth the try. I will love to continue perusal you shine from the confort of my new rental apartment for many years to come, Keep shining on, Your truly, Mercedes

  • I love perusal you transform your new house. I am so happy for you and cannot wait to see everything completed. I am working on painting the inside of my house and it is hard to follow through. Ive completed one room so far ( after almost a year 🫣). perusal your website gives me motivation to finish 🤗

  • Hi Drew! Your articles always bring me so much joy. They inspired me to recreate my home when I moved into my apartment last year and think outside the box of what’s possible without feeling so limited by a budget. I don’t know why I limited myself so much before but you have really made this entire process so much more fulfilling and enjoyable for me. My cousin now refers to me as “Jasmine Fox” because of how much I enjoy creating and recreating my space haha. Your articles have also helped me feel inspired and motivated during I time I was lacking both things and gave me something to put my focus on instead of ruminating so I want to say thank you for all that you do and congratulations on your beautiful new home! I really would like to win, so i can gift my best friend a tv when she finds a new place to live. I love you so much❤️ can’t wait for more articles to watch. @quezonykka

  • Love your articles!! My home goals this year are to finally finish my decorating my livingroom (it needs a lot of help) and my bedroom, refinishing some furniture, repainting doors, DIY remodeling one bathroom, etc. Your ideas are so inspiring! I have learned so much and look forward to more! I would love that TV. Thank you!

  • I was on vacation, Did I miss the TV??? I love your website- can I move into the apartment you are leaving? You have made it so lovely. Juust kidding,Ii live in Chicago and though i would love to live in (california?) I couldn’t move away from Chicago. But can’t wait to see how you make your new home your own space- I know it will be fantastic!!!

  • I just bought my first house also! It would be amazing to win the frame tv!! Also, I would be keeping it just to be able to tell everyone that comes over that it came from you! I would definitely be using it as a talking point lol! Also, I don’t have insta…I always kind of feel a bit punished when everyone tells you to go, maybe I can get a second chance by being here, Maybe? If not thanks anyhow!

  • ahhh! This is a dream! I’ve loved following your content since the beginning and we just bought our first house! The day you painted your contest winner’s house with “unfussy beige” I had also just bought that color and was painting while perusal your show. You kept saying “it’s SO pink” and i was thinking the same thing. Thank you for doing what you do!

  • Happy new year Drew, you’ve done so much at your young age and just wish you many more blessings 🙏❤️ You’ve kept your parents and brother close to you and i love that you shared your apt with tenant owner that passed away 🙏 he was so excited, it made me cry 😢❤️ wishing you a great new year, you look great and sound so happy again 🙏💕 @2pink68
