  • Good plan, but I’m not a fan of using liquid nails on drywall. I would have cut a board the width of the closet wall and drilled it into at least two studs. The problem comes later if the shelf gets broken, falls or someone puts something really heavy up there and it separates from the drywall. Also if someone else goes to remodel that closet later they will be cursing you down the road.

  • great vid… but the liquid nails (as strong as it is) will not be that strong. a bond is only as strong as the weakest bond, in your case, the weak bond is actually the paint on the wall. you might as well have used paint to stick it to the wall. if it fails, it will rip the paint right off of the drywall.

  • In the future you should say that your plans are in your “Etsy store” and people will know there is a “fee,” and not lead someone to believe that the plans are free. It’s ok to charge as you worked very hard in making them, just be honey and upfront on how you choose to distribute them. Beautiful shelf BTW.

  • Love the shelf! So nice and simple and looks very easy to build!! Thank you! Just a quick question about pocketholes. When you screw into them, arent you scared that the screws will come out from the other end? Whats the trick to avoid that. Im guessing that we have to get the right size screw but would love to hear your answer for this!

  • It’s not only amazing how passionate and good you are, but you actually took time to make this article . I am from India and I am not used to carpenter work, articles like these really make it exciting. Question is what is best wood for shelves ?? What are must tools and nice to have tools ?? Kindly helpn

  • Next time why don’t you cut away the baseboard from the center section and get it closer to the wall and and re-install the base in the middle of the section to clean up the look. Also.. use “pin rails” for the upper shelf in the back to prevent sagging. Also… you dont show anyone dimensions at all, and you talk way too much.

  • I don’t have a closet but a wall in my laundry rm I’m wanting to create a closet space along the wall if that makes sense. Thank u sm for the wood idea I didn’t know it existed! 🤪 I’m on a small budget so any way I can cut cost w/o making it look cheap I’m all 4 it. Thanks again cheers to DIY ladies

  • This has really helped me! I have about the same size space in my bedroom and i want to have a built in wardrobe there but having seen how expensive bespoke ones are (really don’t understand as the materials aren’t that expensive and it would take a day to fit so i can’t understand someone charging more than £500 for the labour) i want to try making it myself. This is simple enough to understand and thats exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much ❤

  • It’s crazy. This is by far the most helpful article I’ve found. You got straight to the point, no man in sight which makes me feel empowered to do it myself, no complaining, didn’t take more than 1 day and then the editing of this article paired with your voice and calm spirit. The more elaborate closet systems cost a mortgage or make you feel like you’re in an AP math class with all of the dimensions. Can’t thank you enough. But thank you. ❤️

  • This is fantastic, especially since you’re showing a real closet, not a tiny bedroom that gets turned into a boutique. My house has only reach-in closets, but three were customized with shelves. My closet wasn’t, so I bought mobile units and I don’t like the way they look. This is definitely going to be a saved article. Thank you so much!

  • Turning the Stupid Sliding Doors into proper Doors: Absolutely Brilliant Using Painter’s Tape like a “ChalkLine”: EVEN MORE BRILLIANT You Lady DIY’ers are worth your weight in gold. Most Men (Myself 1000% included) just cannot think “outside the box” the way y’all do. BIG BIG Thank you for taking the time to do this article!

  • This is my size of closet and I have been wanting to do this. I would love more details on the wood type and instructions step by step and around how much this cost please. I do not have a nail gun and how do you make pocket holes? I have a drill and drill bits. I will have Lowes cut my wood since I do not have a saw. Help! I will be doing this myself too.

  • Great job, thank you!!!! Did you ever calculate how much increased hanging space you got by doing this? (Btw, just fyi, you could fit at least 2x the amount of hanging clothing by switching to the flat, flocked hangers (the originals were called “huggable hangers” but there are now many knockoffs. Truly amazing space savers, but you have to replace ALL the hangers in order to get the effect.)

  • Saw a similar design of this in a new built house when delivering cabinets and they had built some hallway storage wall shelves with the ladder style open closet. These are awesome. Plus, nothing more badass than a woman that can not only read a tape measure, but can do all of the wood working with finesse.

  • I have a small closet. 6ft by 4 to 4 and a half ft. My room is also not a great sice and is oddly shaped so I took everything out of my closet and moved my PC and desk into the closet so now I have a little office room. Only problem now is I have no where to hang my shirts! lol! Being a simple man I don’t have lots of shirts or jackets or anything so I don’t need much space. Maybe a 3 ft long rod at the most and some shelving under it would be nice. Would have to put it in my bedroom which I am perfectly fine with. Sadly I lack the experience and ingenuity so not really sure how to go about doing it. Would be nice if I could find an all in one kit with just the frame. That’s all I really need. Left side, right side, top side, and back side. Will run a rod inbetween for shirts/jackets. I don’t think they make any kits though? I have been Googling for days and can’t really find what I am looking for. Basically I’m after a bookcase with no shelves that I can throw a rod in for shirts and what not. I know this article is 2 years old but if anyone stumbles across this and knows where I can find something to do what I am trying to achieve here lemme know please. Thanks!

  • ummm…. how on earth did this fit under $75? I just renovated my closet, slightly bigger than this one. I bought the main shelving system after searching a lot but i don’t count that one. I had to custom make entirely the part where coats are hanging because it is under a 45 degree slope and it was impossible to buy ready made without cutting and slicing parts. So that part alone required 2 melamine boards ($50+ total)+ 2 pieces of real wood (was one cut in 2 @ $25). Then i needed brackets and widgets (just the round widgets to attach the rod in was $9). I painted walls fresh, used 1,5 quarts buckets but had to buy 2 (2 colors) and that was also $50+. I get it that prices jumped over the last year, but even a year ago, i would be in for $150. Not counting 2 weeks of hard labor (had to retape bad builders job), spackling old holes, and i nearly fainted working under incandescent lamp in that narrow space doing the painting lol. That stuff was sauna.
