How do you dress an arched doorway?

Archways are a crucial part of a home’s decor, serving as a gateway to a world of creativity and architectural features. They can be a canvas for creativity, transforming a passageway into a gateway to another world. The style of an archway should align with the broader theme of the home, whether it’s timeless elegance, minimalist efficiency, playful rebellion, or down-to-earth charm. Classic archways are ideal for Victorian or Spanish revival homes, while modern homes can showcase angular, sleek archway decor.

The colors and themes should harmonize with adjacent spaces and the broader decor of the home. A neutral palette can maintain flow, while boldly colored archways can act as a statement piece. Thematic elements can also be used for cohesion, such as beach-themed archway ideas incorporating tones of blue and green accents.

Are arched doorways trendy?

An arched doorway is a unique and visually appealing design feature that draws the eye and emphasizes the height of walls, creating a spacious space. The soft curve contrasts with the straight lines of the room, making the design choice interesting. Pairing the arch with custom doors creates an elevated look. The arch is a nod to charming European design, and in the Belotta project, it is a theme throughout the home, creating a beautiful cohesive statement of warmth and charm.

Are arches in homes outdated?

The love for archways continues to thrive in the modern world, with modern homes often featuring clean lines, neutral colors, and sleek appearances. However, arched doors are not outdated. By choosing a door with a solid color, clean-lined windows, and a polished handle, you can combine them with modern home designs. Arched wooden doors can make your house stand out and are perfect for homeowners who appreciate stunning architecture.

How to disguise an archway?

Arch arches, popular in the past, have become less desirable due to their time-consuming, dirtier, and costly removal process. To hide or integrate arches without demolishing them, curtains can be used on windows and inner doorways. Cover the upper, curved part of the arch with drapery, forming a rectangular shape by side curtains. Blinds can be used for windows. If the upper part of the arch is built up, a rectangular door can be used to close inner openings without doors.

If the opening is not tall enough, an outside-wall sliding door can be placed. The door panel should be oversized to cover the curved part and placed on the side from which the arch is more annoying. A mirror in the unused pass-through window and a console table or chest of drawers can distract from the arch’s shape and make the space useful. Adding shelves to the arched pass-through window can create an excellent storage and displaying space. Seeking the help of an interior designer for further solutions is recommended.

To wallpaper archways, arrange strips to leave even gaps between the sides of the arch and the next full-length strips. Hang strips over the face of the arch, cut around the curve, and leave an 25mm margin for folding onto the underside. Wallpapering around doors, windows, sockets, and light switches can be challenging. To wallpaper around these obstacles, turn off the electricity at the mains, hang the wallpaper over the switch or socket, make diagonal cuts from the center to each corner, tap excess paper against the edges of the face plate, trim off waste paper, loosen the face plate, tuck the margin behind, and re-tighten the plate. • This is so helpful. I am taking down a plaster wall, kept the framing up so far because I want to figure out how to keep some of the top frames and arch it before plastering. There are doors and walls in this home that WERE arched. They went and put in their Square Door fames and drywalled the empty space. ugh!!! archetorture

  • I did not want the arches to look like the Simpsons’s house which are half-circles, except for the old closet and the bookcases. That’s why I chose to trace the arcs wider. The entrance to the sunroom is 36″ wide x 80″ high. The entrance from the kitchen, next to the built-in pantry (see my article) is 36″ x 80″. The opening separating the living room and the dining room is 48″ x 80″. With a non-bearing wall you could make it a bit more than 80″ tall but don’t go over board. It would look odd.

  • Hi! Refer to the graphic at the beginning on how to cut the plywood to make the arch and its measurements. It has to fit in the rough opening and by that I mean from stud to stud without the drywall, of course. Measure and cut the plywood so that it will fit a bit tight in between the studs from side to side of your entryway. If properly measured at the very top, your arch structure will leave enough headroom. Don’t hesitate if you have any more questions.

  • Well, if it’s not your house there’s not much you can do except trying to convince your friend. A larger opening would look much better in a bedroom. In the case of installing a door later it could be done with a bi-fold or a combination of two bi-folds like in my article “How to build a pantry (or a closet)”. There’s gonna be some amount of work involved no matter what you do in the future. That niche in the wall with the tile was a lot of work, I tell you. Thank you for your kind remarks. 😀

  • is there a rule of thumb for matching up archways? as in, a ratio or formula for larger and smaller arches in the same room? I’m looking to install a very large arch way over a half wall dividing up my family room, installing a support pole then continuing with another arch over the walkway into the family room. will look like a double arch way with uneven arches and a column holding up the midpoint….any suggestions for ratios?

  • Thank you VERY much. You did a really great job of making the project understandable to people that have no experience with this sort of thing. I think a lot of people have a very hard time teaching because they assume that their students know more than they really do. Your great, hope to see more articles from you!

  • (Continued). It would look odd in the sense that it’s too close to the ceiling unless you live in a house where ceilings are higher than the regular home. You can also make the opening wider if you have enough room side to side but it would involve more work taking care of the flooring and re-installing studs, etc. However, if you can do that it would look more elegant in my humble opinion.
