Interior design psychology is a field that deals with interior environments and how they can generate various feelings. Design psychologists play a crucial role in understanding how design influences human behavior and emotions, creating functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces. Interior design psychology involves understanding the fundamentals of color theory and how different colors can influence mood and perception of space.
To become an interior designer, one typically requires a bachelor’s degree, specialized certification, job experience, or just an eye for design. Common educational paths for today’s interior designers include obtaining a degree or diploma, learning specialized software, and receiving a license. Designers who have expanded their expertise through degrees in Psychology, Sociology, or Business can bring valuable insights into human behavior, project management, and client relations.
A good place to start would be a major in psychology with a minor in architecture or interior design. Most interior architecture/design degrees will either want a creative subject (like art) or a portfolio of design work (or both)
Interior design courses often combine psychology with design because the two cannot be thought of as separate disciplines. Interior designers typically hold a bachelor’s degree, but certificates also prepare graduates for careers in interior design. Design Psychologists must obtain degrees in Environmental Psychology in either a bachelor, master’s, or doctorate degree.
In summary, interior design psychology is a field that focuses on understanding how design influences human behavior and emotions, with a focus on understanding color theory and the impact of color on mood and perception of space.

I like it. For me, the purpose of the building is to serve the needs of the occupants of that building in such a way that they fulfill the purpose of the building. For example: a church is a place of worship. That is its purpose and intent. That said, it is the people occupying the church that are doing the worship NOT the building. Thus to fulfill the purpose of the building, the designer must design the church in such a way as to facilitate the psychological worship experience of the people visiting the church. The same can be said for any building or any part of any building. That is architectural design.
I keep coming back to this article as a fantastic summary of what environmental psychology is all about in context to the built environment. These design principles should form the basis of building design, rather than being a simple afterthought. If we can get this message out there beyond the niche crowd, into the minds of those that can make a difference, the future of architecture will be built to build up people’s lives with a supporting built environment rather than simple design and visual impact. I believe it can be brought to the masses of the design world, and will do my part to make it so. Sam-THMP.
