In my early 20’s I owned a small business specializing in leather/vinyl repair. It’s a very rewarding industry, both financially and visually. I loved walking up to a vehicle with destroyed leather seats and say to myself, “I can fix that”. The sad reality is for both myself and the unwitting persons who bought those vehicles, was the product only last for a few months at best before the dye’s and repair product started deteriorating. After several years I began to feel like I was operating a “scamming” business, knowing full well that every single car that I “repaired” would soon be back to its original state. The only repairs that were permanent were carpet dye and even then, if it’s a red stain, it would eventually begin to bleed back through.. I’m now 48, on my third business (sold the other two) and love what I do for a living… I’m sure the automotive repair industry is still alive and thriving, I only hope the products of today hold up better than they did 20+ years ago.. Trust me, this is a great solution when selling a car, but give it a few years and the cracks will return. I bought a ’92 W124 in 2016, the front seats looked amazing, now the seats’ paint is cracking to reveal the damaged leather below. This is akin to the pre-sale bodywork blow-over many dealers give their cars to present them in the best light. The only way to repair damaged leather as in 0:39 is to replace the panel, otherwise it will be like taking a wrinkled 80-year-old, applying some make-up and expecting them to pass as a 30-year-old for the rest of their days.
I am at a loss for words. All these years I’ve wondered how leather is restored & my God. This is just amazing. What a gift. I’m sure it takes years & years of practice to nail the strategy but I’d love to attempt this one day. I think mixing/matching the correct paint color would probably be the hardest part for me, after spending however much money on all the tools necessary to complete the job. Thank you for posting!
Great article! Please could you tell me how to maintain the seat repaired like this? My front seats are repaired, so the leather is under the color and clearcoat and I am not able to use leather conditioner to soften it. And also I see a problem that the repaired seat does not breathe at all so you sweat a lot on it (compared to original rear seats which are not repaired). Is there any way to fix this?
No way, I would have had it re-upholstered. By the time I pay you guys for all that labor, and all you did was “hide” it you didn’t repair anything. I would definitely had all the seats and possibly the door panels, redone in actual factory speck materials, and paid a professional to do the fine work.
Can you do this also with plastic seats or only with leather seats? Could they me e me if it would go, true at least very nice if they could make a list or write me how it’s all called exactly and where you can buy / order it all right and in which reinfolge? Would be really nice, is really mega what they can.
It’s no longer dyed leather or vinyl though. It’s painted, which means after sitting and sliding on it a bit, the paint is going to wear off. I feel this would be a very temporary fix that would not be as soft, flexible, nor resilient as the original surface. For the labour involved, this seems like a way to scam used car buyers who might not know the temporary nature of these nice looking seats.

It looks really very well done. I had repair in my W210 in a same way with amazing final results . But cannot be as a new one in 2 years again I have cracks and my eyes are always there when I open the door . Just to mention after repair it was really amazing, car is always in garage with controlled humidity . 2 years and 26 000 km again I have cracks .. And finally decided in the beggining of May to change completely the leather in front .
I like to add 1/3 part filler to 1/3 TPE binder and the remaining 3rd would be for the dye tint. This allows the filler to flex with the temp variations and the stretch stress from sitting etc. I have boots that have this type of repair done 6 years ago, no signs of cracking, and my leather bucket seat in my expedition still looks like new beige deer skin leather. I hear that graphene in an oil modified enamel is a new top coat solution that works in synergy with TPE binders and provides incredible UV refraction characteristics.

I think I must be weird because I actually LIKE the look of worn leather, not if it is an actual crack or hole that goes clean thru but I like the look of the crease marks, have not watched this yet but if this was my car I would repair the bits that had worn thru then condition the leather well so the creases aren’t super light in color like that and do not become cracks. I don’t think leather needs to look perfectly smooth and do not find that to be desirable. my new truck the seats are so smooth, I cant wait until they start to crease up a bit and get all comfy looking. EDIT after perusal I think you did a great job, for me that would be over restoring it but I know I am not the common case. id rather see the crease and just have them blend better so yes to the paint but probably no to the filler except where it was truly needed.
This reminds me of a jacket I had that was blue leather on one side and fur on the other side and I threw that jacket away because the leather had worn out and it was almost the same color as those seats I just saw you fixed and now I’m pissed off! Because I could have found a person like you to fix that jacket and make it look new again this was amazing work😊
For the cost to repair this you could probably just get new seats. For Cadillacs you could just buy the parts cheaper than you would pay someone to restore. Of course, this process would be better for collector cars or maybe german cars but wouldn’t be worth it for many others. I could get a factory leather seat covers for $300 to $500 which is less than what you would pay someone to restore like you have done.
Great job, but the paint is mismatch and there’s grey in it. I have a 124 300D with the same blue interior. In the end when he applies a second coat, the difference becomes from negligible to a very noticeable different blueish grey, and will definitely mismatch with door cards and other plastic interior.

I have a question 🤔 when you apply body filler and paint and cold weather and sitting in the chair time after time doesn’t the filler crack and then paint fail? Like spraying a filled balloon 🎈 with paint and then squishing the balloon after paint dries would cause cracks and then failure? How much does this process cost?
not sure how this is a repair, more like cosmetic adjustment. Like is the seat gonna be soft and smooth like leather, or feel like plastic chemical crap that might melt in the sun or wipe onto occupants clothes? I feel like a proper “repair” would be like putting all new, fresh leather over the seats.
