Why is Denise not in season 2 of A Different World?
After the first season of The Cosby Show, Debbie Allen, an alumna of Howard University, was hired to revamp the show. Allen was in favor of having a pregnant Denise Huxtable, but Cosby suggested Lisa Bonet could be pregnant. To avoid viewers not accepting Denise as an unwed mother, Allen decided that Denise would drop out of Hillman, return home, and travel to Africa in the fifth season. Allen also wanted to keep Tomei, a white student at Howard, to relate to the show and see the other side of racism.
However, the network rejected this storyline, and Tomei was released from the show. Cree Summer and Charnele Brown were replaced by Cree Summer and Marie-Alise Recasner, respectively. Darryl M. Bell and Sinbad were promoted to the principal cast, and Glynn Turman and Lou Myers were added as supporting cast members. This led to the placement of Whitley and Dwayne at the center of a wider ensemble.
How was Denise written out of A Different World?
Bonet was fired from A Different World before its second season aired, but Cosby reinstated her into The Cosby Show’s fifth season. The show underwent several changes to adjust to her departure, borrowing real-life inspiration from his daughter Erinn, who had dropped out of college to find herself. They reworked Denise’s storyline to reflect children remaining loved by their parents despite disappointing them sometimes.
The episode where Denise returns home premiered on October 6, 1988, and the show concealed Bonet’s pregnancy using loose-fitting clothing, large coats, furniture, and grocery bags. To allow Bonet time to have her baby, she was written out of the series for a year by having Denise announce she has dropped out of Hillman to pursue a job opportunity as a wildlife photographer’s assistant in Africa. Denise was demoted from main to recurring character for the remainder of the season.
Despite NBC producers alluding to the possibility of Bonet returning to A Different World permanently post-pregnancy, she would only make one final appearance on the spin-off, a cameo during its third season. Allen created an entirely new character, Freddie Brooks, to replace Bonet as the show’s “earthy, bohemian” character. Tomei was also fired and her character written out, despite Allen’s original intentions to retain “the dynamic of having a white girl in a black college”.
Bonet resumed her role on The Cosby Show full-time after giving birth to daughter Zoë Kravitz and secretly marrying Lt. Martin Kendall (Jose C. Phillips), a Naval officer she meets in Africa, becoming stepmother to his three-year-old daughter, Olivia (Raven-Symoné). The sixth season premiere “Denise: The Saga Continues” established the sitcom’s season premieres as episodes in which a Huxtable child would share surprising news with their parents.
Cosby fired Bonet altogether at the end of season seven, citing “creative differences”. The season’s 24th episode “Cliff and Jake” marked Bonet’s final appearance on the show. Cosby commended Bonet’s acting talent and divided her screen time among new young actors. Pam Tucker, a cousin of the Huxtable family, is considered a “replacement” for Denise, as StyleBlazer believes it was created because the sitcom needed another character to play a free-spirited problem child.
Why was Maggie written off A Different World?
Tomei played Margaret “Maggie” Lauten, one of HBCU’s only non-Black students, which was written off after the show’s first season. She enjoyed the time during that period and has been thinking about the show, especially during the All in the Family live episode for ABC’s Live in Front of a Studio Audience. When asked about her character’s future, Tomei responded that she would be back at Hillman.

What I like about Dwayne’s initial approach he approached her with love he said to her I can live without furniture, but can’t live without you, you are my wife, and I love you. After that,it shutt down any opportunity for an argument .To her it didn’t matter weather he snapped his fingers or said come on,she was gonna leave with him no matter what, because all she sees, is this is my husband, and he loves me, and together we are going to go, and work this thing out.
IT WASN’T THAT SHE RAN BECAUSE HE SNAPPED HIS FINGERS AT HER OR LIKE SHE WAS SUBSERVIENT TO HIM. SHE RAN TO SOLVE A PROBLEM AND PRESERVE WHAT SHE WANTED. THAT “BRAVADO” TO THE GIRLS WAS HER DEFENSE MECHANISM. SHE WAS REALLY HURT AND AFRAID. SHE JUMPED AT THE CHANCE TO SOLVE A PROBLEM. HE DIDN’T SAY”COME ON” LIKE HE WAS HER MASTER/BOSS. HE SAID, “COME ON. LET’S WORK THIS THING OUT!” OUT OF HIS FEAR OF LOSING WHAT HE CHERISHED OVER SUCH A SMALL THING IT WAS LIKE, “HOLDON. STOP THE BUS. LET’S NIP THIS THING IN THE BUD. YOU’RE TOO IMPORTANT TO ME!” 💜💜💜
My ex and I fell out several months ago and didn’t talk for two months. He finally broke his silence, called me and came over and said “let’s talk”. After talking I said we haven’t officially made up. He said “come on let’s go make up” and led me into the bedroom. And I just remember waking up the next day not remembering what happened. Lol when a man takes charge, it is so sexy! He’s been over several days per week ever since. Lol
What I love about this is that sometimes, big arguments can come out of the smallest things. And if not careful, the biggest mistakes too. I have overhead plenty of conversations in my life where women get together and trash their man behind his back. Both men and women need to be careful! Don’t lose a good spouse listening to women who don’t have the same kind of man you do; or listening to women who don’t have a man. Goes both ways.
