There’s already a plan to fix this. Theres a cool documentary about how we did it a few years ago. They hire a crew of the most experienced scientists of all fields, some hacker kid, a couple of military dudes and a couple of well informed dudes who happen to be best friends on a mission into the core. They have a cool state of the art drilling rig that can dig through the earths crust and get to the inner core where they will launch nukes and set them off in a clockwise rotation to jump start the motionless core. The spinning of the inner core also seems to play a role in producing the electromagnetic field around the Earth. This field helps protect us from the solar wind. Over time the solar wind could strip away our atmosphere. Because Mars’ core seems to have stopped spinning a while ago it’s electromagnetic field has broken down and is very spotty. Because of this it’s atmosphere has been leaking away making it much thinner than it once was and less hospitable to life. Whether ours switches directions doesn’t seem to matter as long as it keeps spinning. Likely it will slow and completely stop like Mars one day but it is probably hundreds of millions of years away… we think. But as the professor noted it is something that needs a lot more study.
So, I’m not a professional but the paper didn’t seem to say it stopped or has begun to spin backward. It seemed as though it was talking about just the speed of the core which has lost its super spin (spinning faster than the mantle itself) and is closer to spinning at the same speed or slower. So, there was a shift in speed rather than an entire halt and backspin. Which in itself you would think makes a huge difference in our day-to-day life. The paper notes that the core slows down and speeds up. The ‘stop and reverse’ is is visible as retrograde motion. As the core slows down the outer layers appear to speed up relative to the core and vice versa. The ‘stop’ is just the point in the cycle when the motion appears to change direction. We see the same thing looking at planets like Mars as the Earth moves more quickly in its orbit. The actual core does not stop nor do the scientists suggest such a thing. It was a surprise that the Professor didn’t explain this.

Clarification: Al the paper is actually saying is that at times the inner core appears to rotate a tenth of a degree per day more than the surface of the Earth does, whilst at other times it rotates about a tenth of a degree less per day than the surface of the Earth does. At no point does it stop spinning nor reverse its direction overall. The “stop and reverse” thing is a gross over-simplification; if you could magically see through the Earths various layers and pick out a feature on the surface of the inner core, then the effect would be that sometimes theat feature would appear to be pulling ahead of you (very slowly!) as the earth spins, whilst at other times, you would be catching up with it or eaving it behind, simply due to a slight difference in rate of spin of the core. This occurs (the paper says) because the inner core is mainly electromagnetically linked to the outer core (which tends to try to accellerate it VERY slowly) but mainly gravitationally linked to the mantle and crust (ie: everything outside of the outer core), which tends to create a decellerating force on the inner core. I havent yet read the entire paper, but it’s likely that variations in the “dynamo” that creates the Earths magnetic field (very slow sloshing around in the outer core due to the action of its magnetic field on itself) are responsible for the changes in rotation speed of the inner core, as the overall gravitational effects of the outer layers absolutely cannot change to any measurable degree.

Reminds me of that simple toy we used to make ourselves; a large button with cord going through it. We’d wind it up by flipping it around in big circles and then give a slight tug outward and it would unwind itself but keep going until it wound itself back up again we kept repeating the process using the momentum it created. It slowed down and sped up and changed spin direction.
So, let me understand this. We know very little about the core. We never been, seen, or measured the core, but We think it started spinning in the opposite direction, but no worries. Just thinking out loud, if the core is the size of Mars inside the Earth and it started spinning in the opposite direction, it would seem to me that the effects would be catastrophic. Mars core stopped spinning, and it became a dead planet as a result, then why are there no major side effects for Earth’s core going in the opposite direction?

For those who imagined the Earth’s inner core spinning under our feet independently of Earth’s crust: The inner core (IC) rotates almost perfectly synchronized with crust. The same authors calculated that IC shifted ≈2.4° eastward in 1991–2010, relative to the crust. Given that IC’s radius is 1220 km, that means that IC’s feature that was right under your home in 1991, in 2010 was 50 km to the East (if you happen to live on the equator. Wait, if it stopped spinning would the magnetic field break down? I thought it was generated by the counter rotation of the inner core, outer core, and mantle? I suppose as long as the outer core & mantle keep spinning we’d have some magnetic field left, but wouldn’t it be significantly weaker? Like so much so that we’d notice it in far more ways than seismic activity?
In the future, technology may make it possible to drill downwards towards the center of the Moon, or perhaps even Mars. Since they’re both considered “dead worlds” (no active cores), and both are smaller than the Earth, this should be possible. Studying their centers could give us some idea as to how our own functions. Plus we’d be able to get to all the rare heavy metals in their cores.
The implications are enormous. With the core spinning in reverse this is likely to create drag on the outer layers and slow them down. This will reduce the centrifugal force on objects located on the surface, increasing greatly our subjective perception of how heavy we are. Wow. This is quite a revelation! Y’talk about a “clockwork orange,” so to speak, the Earth might be. But if it happens fairly regularly then there’s really nothing to worry about, but plenty to learn. Maybe it’s like the core has to UNWIND itself magnetically, and might even precipitate the expected polar flip. Good thing the core is surrounded by a liquid outer core (left out in the explanation), which means there’s little or no direct transfer of motion to the surface. I’ve been subbed to a website that has predicted this to happen because we are about to go through a polar shift/reversal. We are overdue for one and the magnetic North Pole has been moving at unprecedented rates that just seem to increase by the year. Well, it actually just stopped moving, something he said it would do if the core was to do what it is doing, he said this is the beginning of the shift. Still wonder how could the inner core self-powered and very stable. All we know so far, if we want to generate magnetic fields we will need either a separate prime mover (generators) or electric current (motor). Earth’s inner core works like an induction generator with its inner core as the rotor with its primordial magnetic fields and the outer core somehow could play its role like generator’s winding. But, still, how could it self-powered? Many sources say it’s powered by turbulent convection, but how come it self-sustain even stays for billions of years? I’m not worried. The earth is always changing and we have little data to study those changes. Man doesn’t seem to last enough to preserve direct information. We have thousands of years of human historical artifacts from continuously inhabited areas. We have developed theories which is nice. We know areas that are deserts once were not. We know areas covered with water once were not. We don’t know time. We do know how to adapt. Nothing lasts.
I find it amusing that we are teaching kids all these things about inside the earth like we know what is in there, but in reality, we know basically nothing but the fact that we got some cool wavelengths that supposedly tells us that there’s a core made up of specific metals. Common we cant even get more than 10 miles down and you’re saying that the core is made up of these metals.
I wish you would explain more about how the scientists and computer models come to these conclusions. i have my own theory of how the earth rotate. here is the theory. as the earth spins, it tilt right?, but what if the tilt isn’t rally tilting like people think. my theory is that the tilt is a rotation 90 degree out of phase with the rotation of the earth around itself and that it slowly prograss 360 degrees in cycles and that the tilt will eventually turn the earth one quarter around, causing and icreased temperature in antartica and complete meltdown and a comming ice age in europe and northern hemisphere and that the earth have done this many times before that have caused floods and melting every time but in different regions of the earth. in my theory, when the earth have turned another quarter around in the 90 degree vector, it will cause a almost complete meltdown of the earth and that when it turns another 90 degree, it will cause a continued meltdown of the north pole and and a a freeze up of antartica south pole. that means there is two warm periods and two reversed warm and freeze periods. that means for 3 quarters of rotation of the earth, half of the earth will be warm period and only one half will experience ice age one period and that this will reveres everytime the earth turns 180 degrees around in the 90 degree vector of the earths spin. i can not prove this, but it chould explain all the flood in prehistory and that we will have another massive one in the future. if we depopulate the planets people now, chances we survive the next mega tsunami some 5 to 6000 years from now is unlikely.
Im not sure the half life of radioactive elements is long enough for how old they say earth is. Shouldn’t it all be decayed by now and no new heat is being produced. Shouldn’t be core hollow? Imagine being in middle of earth and think about gravity. The whole planet would try to tear you apart becouse matter is all around you. It would try to pull you in all direction at the same time. Can someone explain why it shouldn’t be hollow? (at least some small portion of core should be)
I believe the inner core has a centrificall force pushing outward, that outward force squeezing against the inward force of gravity and the weight of the earth. The center of earth has no gravity the centrificall force has to be doing something with the mass up to a point or area where it is cancelled, stronger towards the equator and weak at the poles. Well, I think it is a big deal, because it may change which areas are frozen or not, but what is good about this is if it is in sync with our Sun getting hotter and colder, meaning more water is available to keep the planet cooler, and less when the sun is cooler. Yes. I’ve just now thought of a way to make that happen. It involves high resolution brain mapping — leading to a simulation of each of our brains — that we then artificially mate, allowing identified weaknesses in each mind to be filled by strengths in the other. Can someone please explain how our “liquid iron core” produces a magnetic field? If you’ve not seen what happens to magnets in a forge, or after they cool, then save your response for someone else. Once a magnetic material is heated to a certain point it loses its magnetic field. So how is a blob of lava ever going to generate a magnetic field strong enough to penetrate the earth, oceans, and reach miles up into the upper atmosphere?
It’s nothing to worry about. By the time the field decays (during the flip), we’ll either not be here, or easily capable of dealing with it. It does bring up an interesting thought though, for me anyway: is it possible to engineer a magnetic field for a planet? Gravitational force is the number one energy source in the universe, earth is not excluded from this. I am worried myself, let my explain. I would love my family to live on under last name, and to make history, whether it be good or bad. If humans end and never enjoy travelling to other planets outside our solar system or even the galaxy, I would hate that, of course I’ll never know that. If humans go extinct, there were many lives that should of been born, and should of been alive, that no one will never know, but yet our atoms live on..In depths of fire or frost, gravity or not, we live on.

How can the inner core be solid nickel/iron when it is said to be 6000 degrees centigrade and it is surrounded by molten hot nickel/iron? It seems all this theory and speculation needs to confer with other branches of science. Astro physicists say everything is expanding. Geologists say the earth is expanding and has stretch marks. The mid Atlantic and pacific ridges show expulsion on both sides, not subduction. This being the case, why is there not a void being created in the center some where? All this is very confusing ???
