📹 HOW TO DECORATE MID CENTURY MODERN | super in depth guide♥
Howdy friends, today we’re taking a look at how to decorate mid-century modern style! By the end of this video, you will officially …
📹 Decorating Our Bookshelves TWO WAYS *Minimalist vs Maximalist* | GUIDE TO DECORATING BOOKSHELVES
We are getting back to renovations at the cottage this week, but first I wanted to decorate our bookshelves in the Living room TWO …
I like the way both shelves have been styled … hard to choose but the maximalist style won out. As for the coffee table dilemma — have you thought about looking at vintage chests or something that is vintage that maybe you could add brass elements to yourself? I love your new LA home but the TX cottage is my fav. It has your heart stamped throughout.
I was so shocked that all the books along the top looked THAT INCREDIBLE!!! I had my full row of books in middle and it looked so awkward so I moved it down to the bottom thinking the weight made sense down buttttt now I need to try very top. That looks AMAZJNG! I’d love to see a brass ladder there 😍
I love the ‘more’ side, of course, because I am all about the stuff! Both sides look wonderful, though. If you’re only lacking one of your encyclopedias, you could most likely find it on eBay. I find singles from a series of books all the time on eBay. You will probably have to pay a little more, but it would complete your set. Hoping y’all are feeling better soon.
Both sides look great but I am leaning towards to right side with more, I feel those shelfs can handle more items, some book shelfs look better with less. You did a fantastic job! Gives me so many ideas for my home. This house keeps getting better and better. Your California home is amazing as well, you knocked it out of the park with using your own things for the living room. Beautiful homes!
So I already knew coming into this article I was a maximalist! This proves it! I love the shelf on the right, not saying the left doesn’t look good, but we both know the extra space will be filled before long! If you were decorating for a client that would be a good start to help them form ideas and have room to grow. And the brass birds are a pair of Quails.
Hi MaCenna, your ideas for your living room sound fantastic and I wanted to recommend that if you were looking for a heavy wood and brass coffee table perhaps looking at shops that carry items from India would be useful (vintage and newer). Having traveled there and being a big fan of a lot of the beautiful items made there I can tell you that nobody does the combination of rich wood and brass like India. There are some import shops that specialize in older heavier pieces and may have exactly what you’re looking for. Good luck on your search. 😁
Sending you get well wishes for you and Romeo, Macenna….its that time of year where lots of virus,s and winter colds are about..ive got gotten over a broncitus type virus myself here in uk, took a while to shift but its so true we have to keep moving and drink lots fluids to fight these colds etc…i love the bookcases i would say im more a maxamilist rather than minimilist but sometimes i try to be more minimalist on shelving..😄 i think the birds lookore like quails than pheasants,my mums garden gets pheasants on as she lives on edge of woodland and she puts food out for them..they ard more slender than quails and bigger ..if you google you,l be able to see both birds and see what you think…but i love your brass birds on bookshelf..🙂 take care and wishing you both a speedy recovery ..🥰
I found a ‘HLC Vintage Crat Badang Carving Natural Wood Teak coffee table with clear laquer finish and metal hairpin legs’. You can spray paint the ‘hair pin’ legs a brass color. I has a rustic look form Amazon. I know how you like unique and the tables are all different since it is from slabs of teak wood, knots and all.
I like the maximalist approach for your bookshelves. The minimalist approach is too bare for my liking. I love the ‘David’ head sculpture. I would transfer it over to the right and put something from the right over to the left. Minor details I know but… I hope you get it how you want it for your home x
The head statue, is a copy of the famous “David” statue by Micheal Angelo. Since you like to travel you can see the original statue in FLORENCE, Italy (Written on your hoody 😋) the real statue is outstanding the most beautiful thing I saw in my life. Both bookshelves are wonderful, I really love you style. If I Wana chose I’ll go for the maximalist design since I love furniture to be a bit minimal. 😍
I really like both bookcases, but know I would end up gravitating to the more maximalist side over time 😂 me and the bf also have lots of books we love that don’t always play nice with the color palette I might want so it’s going to be a little extra. Good luck with the coffee table hunt! It can be so hard to find what you want when you have a really specific idea, says the person who spent like 3 weeks looking at benches for the entryway 😅
You have the ability to curate the most interesting items and put them together in such a tasteful way. I wish I could have heard what you were saying. I’ve noticed that your more recent articles have been at a much lower volume. Being hearing impaired is frustrating, to say the least. I have enjoyed your content so much and I hope you don’t take this as me ragging on you. I just thought you may need a better mic or to pump up the volume a tad higher. Love you and your websites.
You did a beautiful job with both, but I’m 100% maximalist! My dream bookshelf aesthetic is like a turn of the century explorer who’s crammed their library with heavily read, well-loved books mixed in with artwork and mementos that bring back vivid memories from their travels. My actual current bookshelf aesthetic is more like… just Mess😅
I’d love to see a article on how to style a bookshelf that holds books you read (contemporary novels, paperbacks etc). The vintage books look phenomenal, but I have so many books I have read that I want to style in an aesthetic way despite not having that beautiful antique look. Maybe in your new LA home?
I love layered art work. But my shelves have bbbbooooookkkkksss! I do have a 6 foot cabinet with edge where I filled the top with brown gravel, added a few rocks, a round vase in moody colors filled with water and live pothos and a horsehair ceramic sitting female. I still love it a year later. A friend calls it a meditation.
XO macenna I absolutely love everything that you do! You look so much like my daughter.🤗 You and your mom were such a joy to watch on the podcast. I absolutely adore your mom’s paintings (she is so gangster) she is Swiggity Swag all the way! she does it all! I look forward to whatever you put out you are both so delightful. A breath of fresh air. So real!!🙋♀️❤ U B U XO McCenna!
Hi MaCenna! If I’m not mistaken, I think your pair of brass birds are “Quail” and the 3-D carving of a man’s head I think is a replica bust of Michelangelo’s “David”. If I’m wrong, please correct me to anyone out there who knows better; thank you. Thanks, MaCenna for another fun and inspirational article. OX :virtualhug:
Love the maxi side the most. However, I was holding my breathe every time you climbed that ladder the way you did. You are not practicing good safety. You should know better than that. Teach good safety. I have a friend whose husband fell from a ladder and has been paralyzed for 15 years now so it DOES happen. Please protect yourself.
I have been looking for a wooden coffee table with brass elements for MONTHS since buying my home, too! I found a few options that I planned to DIY for waaayy cheaper since they were priced $3K-$5K and my fiancé can weld, but we didn’t have a welder on hand. Since your dad can weld, that may be an option for you, though!!!
The best place in the country to find any kind of furniture is North Carolina – known as the furniture capital of the world. Raleigh has amazing flea markets, and the whole area is loaded with antique stores! I bet you could find your coffee table here. Might be worth a little vacation to check it out 😊
I loved this article so much, Macenna! I love your website so much, but this is definitely one of my favorite articles! 🙂 Pretty progress and decorating is where my heart is at 🙂 I don’t even know which side I like more, both look amazing. I feel like because the shelves are so spacious and high, even the “more is more” side doesn’t look too crowded. LOVE it! ❤
I am most definitely a maximalist when it comes to bookcases. We actually decorate in a very similar way too. I love laying books down to prop something on top and using artwork and photos to fill in the back. Staggering things is also a must. I, however, think my bookcases are even more filled than even your max side. 😀 I really love these built-ins you created!
That sculpted head is a Michelangelo. It’s the head of David. The whole David statue is the one that Florida (?) fired a teacher over because she showed it to her students in 6th grade. And ong, David has a penis! 😱 lol. But you should know more about art, really. That statue is world famous. It’s in the the Galleria dell’Accademia, Florence.
May you can try Restoration Hardware ( RH ) outlet. Sometimes, have beautiful coffee tables. Even though, they’re coffee table tins to be low . However, the usually have brass and wood tables. Might be not your style. Just a suggestion. I always watch your articles don’t comment much. However, you are amazing. ❤Thank you for sharing your journey and life experiences with me .
Whoa… I think we share the same brain when it comes to interior style. LOL I think I have to have my mom watch this so I can watch her jaw drop at the similarities of everything I rant/rave over or obsess about and the struggles of frustration of not being able to find a specific thing you know exists. Plus it’s a very similar green paint to mine which I customized with two different paints 😅 Had it for past 2 years and it makes me so happy whenever I open the door and see it. But keywords she’s heard from me also: tapered candles, any candles, “brass candle holders” (something I rant I can’t find anywhere in my area), dark hardwood furniture, brass brass brass, vintage/antique books (which she’s seen me restore some spines at least with diy gilding), lamps (I’ve always had a thing for old things especially lamps), dried florals, marble, specific vessels, jewel tone colors (I was blinking a lot like ‘no way’ when you said it), and the collecting/curating/reselling. 😂😅 The only thing I’m not into is what you call strands. That I think is a trendy thing which I don’t get but she’s also heard me say “oooh how art nouveau”, “I want everything Art Deco. REAL, classic, art deco”, and the mention of natural material mid-century vintage pieces. The only plastic I can say I like would be bakelite but I also like pieces by important Industrial Designers of the past.
Bookshelves usually is the last thing that I would do in a home but macenna, you made me make the bookshelves as one of my priorities now 😍 loooove how you did with your bookshelves. Its realistic with a style. Unlike minimalistic bookshelves, i don’t see it “real”, it’s more on just “a show off” bookshelves. But hhis however is just perfect. 👌 ( just my personal thought ☺️)
As an avid reader and book industry professional, I always like to take an opportunity like this to urge you (and your audience) to de-colonize your bookshelves. Include BIPOC authors and women. If you only want classics, you can never go wrong with writers like Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, or modern classics like Amy Tan and Isabel Allende.
Hi cutie pie! Each of your homes are coming along so well- you and I share the appreciation for old things with character- in fact, I myself have turned into something old with character, myself..😂 May I suggest for your gardens in Texas, make your beds twice as wide; and fill them with native perennials and a drip system with an auto timer, so you don’t have to worry when you’re in LA. This will give you less grass to mow; always a good thing! And save your back-( and time!) this really works- put cardboard boxes directly down on your dirt, don’t worry about pulling weeds, the boxes will smother them out! Then layer on some garden soil, followed with compost, and put down 3-6″ of wood chips or pine straw as mulch. Water thoroughly in between each layer. This will amend your dirt and turn it into soil, full of microbes and minerals and worms! You don’t have to dig a hole to plant your shrubs- just make a small slit in the cardboard, and seat the plant into the layers of soil, and water well. And don’t plant little plants closer than 12-18″ from the wall or edge of porches. Remember, they’re going to get big!😮 Have fun, I always look forward to the sunshine you spread! Thank you!
I read a poem in one of my mother’s High School literature books. Circa 1940 era. It’s sad but with a sweet vintage “vibe.” Think of a painting your mom might do to capture the visual picture. Little Boy Blue unknown The little toy dog was covered with dust, But sturdy and staunch it stands. The little tin soldier is red with rust, And its musket molds in his hands. Time was, when the little toy dog was new, And the soldier, passing fair. That was the time when our Little Boy Blue Kissed them, and put them there. “Now, don’t you go, ‘til I come,” he said, “And, don’t you make any noise!” So, toddling off to his trundle bed, He dreamed of his favorite toys. And, as he was dreaming, an angel’s song Awakened our Little Boy Blue. Oh, the years are many, The years are long, But the little toy friends are true. Aye, faithful to Little Boy Blue, they stand, Each in the same old place, Waiting for the touch of a little hand, And the smile from a little face. And they wonder, still waiting, In the dust of that same old chair, “What has become of our Little Boy Blue, Since he kissed them, And put them there?”
I watched the article right after it appeared on the net. Now I’m refeshing my mind perusal it again here now. I still strongly favor the maximalist styling. That’s my nature. Very good & entertaining job on your cottage home in TX & your all’s wonderful new family style home in CA. Your article posts are some of the most informative & relateable DIY home renovations articles on YouTube…my bf Wilbur & I also have great fun perusal Drew at LoneFox.
So sorry that you have been under the weather, MaCenna. Hope you and Romeo are back in excellent health by now. Love your bookcases. I prefer the more maximalist version on the right. ♥ I have to say, though, that if they were my bookcases, they would pretty much be filled with books…books that I read, not vintage. As a retired library clerk, I am definitely into books for reading, rather than decoration. But that’s me. Everyone is different and we each have our own unique style. LOVE your articles, always. ♥♥♥
You should buy a glass and brass coffee table if you like the feet/inlay. Remove the glass part and add a DIY Dark Wood Top. I have yet to see the coffee table you are looking for too. I’ve seen wood and metal pipes or glass and brass. You have made beautiful furniture before, so why not? At least it would be precisely what you want. OR….. Take the top of a wood and metal industrial table and the legs of a glass/brass table and combine them. Industrial do like their heavy dark wood. Just some ideas! Good luck! Everything is looking beautiful.
Those turned out so nice! I’m definitely a Maximalist! I love old books and I have a lot of my grandma’s old book collection; they are so cool, and ornate! I’m so late in seeing this because I juat found you recently, so probably someone has told you your birds are Quail. And I remember your “head” cost $124 because I watched that vlog not too long ago. 😊 I believe it’s supposed to be the head of David by Michelangelo. Which we got to see in Florence, and it’s huge and beautiful. I really am enjoying your website and I’m trying to watch them in order, but I can hardly wait to watch the one where you share your pregnancy!
Have you thought about small battery powered lamps for your bookshelves. I just recently heard about them from another you tuber. They even have floor lamps. As for coffee tables, I finally gave up looking, my husband ended up making ours. You could probably design your own, If you were willing to give up on brass trim. That might be a little tricky.
Oh so wonderful MaCenna, you did a beautiful job styling those shelves. Someone suggested making a library ladder and that could look really unique and good, also with the railing for both sides so you can hook the ladder onto it and climb up it to change anything on the shelves and it will have that cool look and stay stationery on either the left or right and then use it also. I am loving how this cottage is turning out, so many beautiful things. Thanks again so much for another wonderful article and I hope that you have a great week coming up and I will be excited to see your next Vlog, sending love and hugs, bye for now! 🤗😍👋👍🙏💜💜💜💕💖🤎
I am, a more is never enough person 😂, my home is called a lovely Museum by every sort of friend, old, young and new people, who come into our home, downstairs, upstairs and the 3rd Floor, and both of my gardens too. When I moved two times, I gave very much away, to the people who liked my stuff, but within 2 years I collected even more 🤷♀️
Macanna, I know the coffee table that your talking about. It’s called a Plantation Butlers coffee table. Google has several great examples (Images) of the table. Good Luck. By the way the chairs that are in the living room are Beautiful. The chairs with the Plantation table and the chairs would be so Beautiful together. Just buy moor of those chairs for the bed rooms. When our house is done I am buying a pair for my living room.
I love your website, your style – and all the things. But I am having a hard time understanding buying books to decorate with as a thing with many you-tubers. And I really don’t understand why books are placed with the spine to the wall. Why not buy books for content that can be pulled off the shelf to have knowledge at your fingertips. “Love him, he’s heavy, he’s not like the ones you see at the stores, someone did that,” you are referring to Leonardo Da Vinci’s David! He doesn’t even seem recognizable to you. how is that possible? I agree a library ladder would be helpful to access the books that hold- all the knowledge.
MaCenna, have you ever thrifted at Habitat For Humanity Restores before? We’ve picked our some really nice things from them here in BC. They also provide extra supplies from contractors as well as donations from the public. The best part is that the funds collected help people get into their own homes. Hope you guys feel better soon! 💜
I understand collecting books, I collect art books and I love looking through them, but it seems so odd to me to collect antique books with beautiful colours on the covers where the actual contents don’t seem to matter all that much to you. It’s so anachronistic and just feels like it has zero connection to your real life, interests or beliefs. And to be clear, I don’t mean the classic literature, I mean the 18th-19th century non-fiction. If you looked closely, I bet you’d find some out-of-date, possibly harmful ideas tucked between Ulysses and your David bust.
I read so much that bits of my shelves are double stacked and there’s absolutely no room for the stuff she’s putting on hers. I do have a jar of bookmarks tho 😂 When I do feel like doing something different I just reorganize the books, the latest style being rainbow shelves. Love seeing you back at the cottage ❤
Wayfair has a coffee table (no connection with Wayfair) but the ‘Deliany Coffee table’ that is ‘manufactured Oak wood veneer and handcrafted hammered brass legs which is a mid-century style they also have Abrielle Coffee table same shppe of the Deliany and they have a round one and there is a ‘Commerce and Market’ Coffee table that is octagon shaped. Ebay has several. I did a search for ‘wood and brass only vintage coffee tables’. Ebay also has vintage chairs
Absolutely stunning! You have a great eye! Love what you did. I am not an interior decorator and am just making a personal observation… the art above your fireplace, while very pretty, does not seem to tie-in with the mood and colours of your bookcases on either side. It has a more modern look, and its shiny glass surface reflects the lights from your ceiling chandeliers. It seems distracting to the overall muted vibe. 😊
I hope you do the honour of reading most of the books on the bookshelves. I love books and l believe it is a disservice to relegate them simply to risers for bowls etc, and decor. I have one bookcase. 80% of it is filled with books my family and l have read. Our favourites. 20% of the bookcase is filled with family photos, 2 vases, a votive candle bowl with a stand and a brass mantel clock. It is the one single piece of furniture that is maximised.
I spent a couple hours designing an overhaul of my living room to create an enclosed daybed with bookcases on 3 sides. As soon as I got a layout… McKenna! I want it a moody green like your shelves. My walls are Dried Lichen, a soft green. I think this is my last house, and I have always wanted a bookcase reading nook. I built the exact chaise I want before I had any idea how to fit it in. My fireplace is on the opposite wall.
I think since you have the money you should look for things that are exceptional and real works of art to decorate with instead of run of the mill stuff like you’ve chosen. Look for treasures. Up your game. Go to antique stores instead of thrift stores and pick out some really beautiful objects or at least educate yourself about beautiful things. And if you aren’t going to buy books you want to read but are buying just for decoration, consider investing in some really beautiful old leatherbound books that are works of art in themselves. Go to some used bookstores and look at their better books. Again, up your game. But maybe you just want to relate to the masses rather than people with real taste and class. I guess you’ll do you and be happy with your own taste, which is ok.. You have potential but are settling for mediocre and common things when you could be more selective and show some taste for the finer things. On first look your shelves look fine but they wouldn’t live up to scrutiny by any real art collector. But if you are happy just creating an impression without showing any discernment, carry on. To each his own.
Good job with the decorating. Shelves can be a struggle! They might look great up close, but when you’re looking at them across the room, they look so different. On the maxi side, I think the taper candle flame looks too close to the top of that shelf. Hope you guys feel better. We need to see more pretty!!
Not sure if this is helpful or not, but in regards to the coffee table maybe try searching for a vintage Mersman coffee table. I found a few in my area that had medium to darker wood tones and a brass detail on the legs or feet. Most of them look like they’re in the mid-century modern style, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Hope that helps!☺️🫶🏻
I definitely love the maximilest side the best. You should mention the maker of the old encyclopedias so we can be on the look out for volume #3! Also …. I am so OCD that I won’t be able to sleep tonight without saying…. on the right there is a book next to the bell and beads that has a white piece of tape or label with a black x on it, that I just want to reach through the screen and rip it off!!!! I buy from Thriftbooks all the time…. and the minute I open the bag, I take off all the labels they added to identify the books. Just the way my head works.
I’m definitely a maximalist. Please could you let us know, even if it’s on the podcast what you did or are going to do with the two chairs you thrifted for the living room for £20. I really love them and personally would love you to use them in the living room but either way I need to know what’s happening with them as I feel you’ve forgotten you bought them.
Great article helping people learn to style shelves! I love the amount of fullness of shelves on the right. For me, it’s Goldilocks perfect – not too full, not too sparse, but just right! I like what’s on the left hand shelves. I love the things you have collected there and the colors. It just needs to have a few things added to complete it. I love the bottom shelf with the lamp as it is. I can’t wait to see how it actually ends up. I think you’ll be moving things around for a week! Oh, and hope by now you and Romeo are feeling great again!
I hope you and Romeo get better soon, it’s not nice being run down. I am not a minimalist, but I actually like that side more than the other side, to me it was less cluttered and looked visually appealing, but then again, I am an Aries so … I love your style and if more libraries looked like your bookshelves, more people would come to them, just saying. have a great week and thank you for all your inspiration.
Love the bookshelves. Since you have so many beautiful items, you might as well display them. As far as your coffee table, since you are looking for something that is evidently unusual, have you thought of finding the metal legs that you like and design a wooden top. You have created so many beautiful designs that you should be able to accomplish this and make something you truly love.
Loving the decorations in both houses. Each house has its own style and your touch on both looks stunning. I am sure Romoe loves both homes. LA he has his own office space. Texas he shares the spaces with you. Other than the 2chairs and the coffee table your lounge area is finished . Not sure if you will be replacing your curtains.
